It had to be studied in every word, and re-written again and again with the profoundest care. He was afraid that he might commit himself by an epithet. He dreaded even an adverb too much. He found that a full stop expressed his feelings too violently, and wrote the letter again, for the fifth time, because of the big initial which followed the full stop.
This misconception has stood, through American indolence, quite as long as it deserves to stand. Since the foregoing was written, the investigations of Mr. Bandelier "On the Social Organization and Mode of Government of the Ancient Mexicans" have been published. With the new light thus thrown upon the subject, this chapter should have been re-written.
What is lost? The revelation this page was to afford. The essay which was to have stood here upon page 127 of my book: the noblest of them all. The words you so eagerly expected, the full exposition which was to have brought you such relief, is not here. It was lost just after I wrote it. It can never be re-written; it is gone.
We see that almost everything that has been written, sung, or stated, of old, with reference to humanity under the feudal and oriental institutes, religions, and for other lands, needs to be re-written, re-sung, re-stated, in terms consistent with the institution of these States, and to come in range and obedient uniformity with them.
But all these preliminary moods and stirrings of spirit were rather obscure at the time, and they do not appear clearer to me now after the lapse of so many years. The few pages I had laid aside were not without their weight in the choice of subject. But the whole was re-written deliberately.
As to the shorter things, the 'Dream' I have struck out. 'One Lesson' I have re-written and banished from its pre-eminence as an introductory piece. The same with 'Second Best. It is quite true there is a horrid falsetto in some stanzas of the 'Gipsy Child' it was a very youthful production. I have re-written those stanzas, but am not quite satisfied with the poem even now.
A new Caesar stalked through the streets of risen Rome, and with purple sail and flute-led oars another Cleopatra passed up the river to Antioch. Old myth and legend and dream took shape and substance. History was entirely re-written, and there was hardly one of the dramatists who did not recognise that the object of Art is not simple truth but complex beauty. In this they were perfectly right.
Once a party of three reporters, from a big metropolitan paper, two men and a woman, after stopping at a nearby road house till they were well lit, drove about in a livery rig till they finally located us at the house of Mrs. Rond.... All the old nonsense was re-written ... things we had never said or even had in our thought ... vulgarities alien to Hildreth's mouth or mine....
At first, indeed, I was ashamed of being re-written and thought that others were not, and only began investigation when the editorial characteristics epigrams, archaisms and all appeared in the article upon Paris fashions and in that upon opium by an Egyptian Pasha.
"Wait a moment," said the banker, as he pressed the button. "I'll see if my stenographer has gone. She usually leaves at noon, but to-day I had some extra work that she stayed to finish no, here she comes we'll have it re-written." "Will you kindly make two copies of this agreement, Miss Brown?" asked the banker.
