I am delighted to say that it shows signs of becoming a fad now, and sleeping porches are being put on houses all over the country. No house in California is considered complete without them. The ideal bedroom is a small dressing-room, opening on a wide screened porch, or balcony, with a door wide enough to allow the bed to be rolled inside during storms or in severest weather.
Fallen leaves from the grove littered the walks and porches. Turning down the lane at the side of the house, Grandemont rode on to the quarters of the plantation hands. He found the workers just streaming back from church, careless, happy, and bedecked in gay yellows, reds, and blues. Yes, André was still there; his wool a little grayer; his mouth as wide; his laughter as ready as ever.
The silence increased his astonishment: he came into a spacious court, and looked on every side for inhabitants, but discovered none. The sultan entered the grand halls, which were hung with silk tapestry, the alcoves and sofas were covered with stuffs of Mecca, and the porches with the richest stuffs of India, mixed with gold and silver.
Yet it is worth observing how perfect in its simplicity the single entrance may become, when it is treated as in the Duomo and St. Zeno of Verona, and other such early Lombard churches, having noble porches, and rich sculptures grouped around the entrance.
As the grey columns, in the march through Maryland, swung through the streets of those towns where the Unionist sentiment was strong, the women, standing in the porches, waved the Stars and Stripes defiantly in their faces. But the only retort of "the dust brown ranks" was a volley of jests, not always unmixed with impudence.
Many of the old wooden houses were replaced with brick, and the beautiful doorways, windows, roofs, and porches still attract craftsmen and architects from different sections of the country, while illustrators find rich material in old Colonial doorways. Miss Winn consulted Mrs. Upham as to what was proper for a girls' tea. "Miss Cynthia is old enough now to begin with friends in a simple manner.
The City Fuquieo is very great, and mightily walled with square stone both within and without, and, as it may seeme by the breadth thereof, filled vp in the middle with earth, layd ouer with brick and couered with tyle, after the maner of porches or galleries, that one might dwel therein.
Markets, public places, the porches and vestibules of homes, which once were adorned with beautifully polished marble surfaces, were now completely stained with gore. Infinite numbers of corpses heaped up everywhere, a horrible spectacle, and the savagery of the foul air, horribly infected both the eyes and the ears.
Some seemed to have straggled away as if they had given up trying to see or hear. So to one nearing it the town had a helter-skelter look. Our travelers passed rough boarded houses with grand-looking people in their dooryards and on their small porches men in broadcloth and tall hats and ladies in silk dresses. It was six o'clock and the men had come home to supper.
People screamed frantically at us from porches and windows and the sidewalk. Occasionally a man would spring into the road to stop Maud, think better of it, and spring out again. One misguided individual hurled a fence-rail across the path.
