Orpah had directed one of the envelopes to herself, and put a stamp upon it all ready for Ruby to write to her. All this was enough to make Ruby forget that she was tired and away from home, and to make her eyes shine like stars; but there was still something else, that I think she liked better than everything else in the desk put together.

Was not this a terrible end to what might have been a noble life? Naomi was the wife of a Jew named Elimelech, who left his own city of Bethlehem to go into the land of Moab, because there was a famine in Canaan. Some time afterwards he died, leaving Naomi a widow with two sons, all dwellers in a strange land. Her sons married two young women belonging to Moab, whose names were Orpah and Ruth.

And Naomi said, "Turn again, my daughters; why will ye go with me? Turn again, my daughters, go your way." And they lifted up their voice and wept again. And Orpah kissed her mother-in-law; but Ruth clave unto her. And she said, "Behold, thy sister-in-law is gone back unto her people and unto her gods! Return thou after thy sister-in-law."

'The three witches from Macbeth, suggested Fraulein usefully. It was finally decided to do Naomi and Ruth and Orpah. Ursula was Naomi, Gudrun was Ruth, the Contessa was Orpah. The idea was to make a little ballet, in the style of the Russian Ballet of Pavlova and Nijinsky. The Contessa was ready first, Alexander went to the piano, a space was cleared.

I have always pitied those other disciples of whom we read that they went back, and walked no more with Jesus. Think what Orpah missed and what Ruth gained by cleaving to Naomi's God! Her story has been Father, mother, sisters, brothers, the grave of her husband she turned her back on them all. Ruth, come back, and tell us if you regret your choice!

With kisses of real love Orpah went back, but she did go back, to her people and her gods, but 'Ruth clave unto her. So should we cling to God, as Ruth flung her arms round Naomi, and twined her else lonely and desolate heart about her dear and only friend, for whose sweet sake she became a willing exile from kindred and country. Is that how we cleave to the Lord?

The name of one was Orpah, t'other Ruth: And there they died ere twice five years were gone; And Naomi was wholly left alone.

The experiment has been since sufficiently tried upon a large scale, and proofs are perpetually accumulating, that the temper and conduct of Orpah were coincident with those of the great majority in the world. The narrative of the journey to the place of Naomi's early residence, is comprised in one short sentence; "So they two went until they came to Bethlehem."

There were rough roads to travel and steep hills to climb. Their feet grew so weary they could scarcely walk, and at last Naomi said: "Go, return each to your father's house. The Lord deal kindly with you as you have dealt with me. The Lord grant you that you may find rest." Then she kissed them, and Orpah kissed her and left her, but Ruth would not leave Naomi.

Then they again wept aloud, and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law good-by, but Ruth stayed with her. Naomi said, "See, your sister-in-law is going back to her own people and to her own gods; go along with her!"
