One minute you iron a soft nightshirt; the next a nightgown starched like a board, and the worst thing to get through with before it dries too much that ever appears in a laundry. After lunch I am promoted to hospital work. All afternoon I iron doctors' and interns' white coats and trousers. It is more interesting doing that. But a bit hard on the soul.

Before going to sleep they sang psalms and hymns, praising God for the blessings of the day. Then they dressed themselves for the night, putting on over the garments they wore during the day a long reindeer kapta, a sort of nightshirt reaching below the feet. More reindeer skins were put over the skins on which we were seated.

But I immediately received a hail of cuffings which made me jump straight out of the soaked sheets, and rush in my nightshirt into the corridor, the door of which I found open. O stupor! it was broad daylight.

Dan don't you see it's Mr. Dan, and he's as white as yo' nightshirt. Go down, I tell you, go down and let him in." There was a skurrying in the room and on the staircase, and a moment later the door was flung open and a lamp flashed in the darkness. "Walk in, suh, walk right in," said Jack Hicks, hospitably, "day or night you're welcome as welcome as the Major himself."

You don't ketch me stayin' down here alone," and she grabbed the back of his nightshirt as he started for the stairs. "Sho! What air you afeerd of? I'll get my revolver, too. I never did see such a coward'y calf as "

He had evidently heard some suspicious sounds, and he came prepared for such a scene as he found. He was dressed in nightshirt and trousers, with his favourite blackthorn cudgel in his hand. He rushed at the burglars, but another it was an elderly man stooped, picked the poker out of the grate and struck him a horrible blow as he passed. He fell with a groan and never moved again.

The door burst open and Hal Bennington flung himself into the room; his trousers were dragged up over his nightshirt, his feet were in slippers without socks, his hair was unbrushed, his eyes were brilliant with fever, his face was pinched and grey; but his voice rang out powerfully, "Stop it, boys!"

The drawers are loose elephant-legged and elephant-waisted things, and instead of buttoning around the body there is a drawstring to produce the required shrinkage. The jacket is roomy, and one buttons it in front. Pyjamas are hot on a hot night and cold on a cold night defects which a nightshirt is free from.

Even Drumley went back on me let 'em put a roast of my last play in the Herald a telegraphed roast from New Haven said it was a dead failure. And who wrote it? Why, some newspaper correspondent in the pay of the Syndicate and that means Brent. And of course it was a dead failure. So I gave up and here I am. . . . This your room?" "Yes." "Where's this nightshirt come from?"

As soon as she came into my room, she lighted my candle, stripped down the bed-clothes, made me take off my nightshirt, and at once began to amuse herself with my little plaything. It swelled out and increased in size under her playful fondling to an extent that surprised me.
