There are always liberating moments at sea when the spirit seems to grow to expand to the limits of sky and water, to become one with them. Such a moment was theirs, the perfect hour of moonrise on a calm and empty sea. The horizon was undefined. They seemed suspended in limitless ether, which the riding moon pierced with a swale of living brightness, like quicksilver.
Just after moonrise they left the house. How little any expectation of the moonlight prospect which was the ostensible reason of their pilgrimage had to do with Knight's real motive in getting the gentle girl again upon his arm, Elfride no less than himself well knew. 'Had I wist before I kist' It was now October, and the night air was chill.
The fat, stumpy corporal, with his enormously broad pantaloons and automaton legs, went down to the fountain with his musket, and after taking a rest and sighting full five minutes, fired at a dove without hitting it. He afterwards joined us in a social pipe, and we sat on a carpet at the door of the guard-house, watching the splendid moonrise through the pine boughs.
I do believe, that, if Dame Nature herself should apply for a school, some of these wise Dogberries would report her "unqualyfide." I will not murder my pretty pet. We will find something better and braver than all that, my little Alice! Confound your Italianos! the birds shall be the music-masters of my tiny dame. Moonrise, and sunset, and the autumnal woods shall teach her tint and tone.
I painted for him in words the varying colours of waves in different seas, the black purple of tropical waters, the bottle-green turmoil of a Cornish sea on a choppy day, the brown channel waves near shore, the jewelled smoothness of the Mediterranean in early morning sunshine, its silver in moonrise, melting into white and black.
Meanwhile, however, we felt that we must not count our chickens before they were hatched; for there would be nearly an hour and a half of darkness between sunset and moonrise, and in that time our crafty friend would be pretty certain to attempt some new trickery if there seemed a ghost of a chance of its proving successful.
What the hunter said when he returned to camp and beheld the work of his visitor is not recorded. Kagh's was a restless spirit. Moonrise again found him abroad in search of food and adventure. This time he traveled far for a slow old fellow. At length he came to the zigzag fence of split rails which prevented the wilderness from encroaching upon the clearing of the Hermit.
There is a green fringe of palm and prickly pear round the black mouth of the well; but nothing of the upper masonry remains except two bulky and battered stones standing like the pillars of a gateway of nowhere, in which some of the more transcendental archaeologists, in certain moods at moonrise or sunset, think they can trace the faint lines of figures or features of more than Babylonian monstrosity; while the more rationalistic archaeologists, in the more rational hours of daylight, see nothing but two shapeless rocks.
But subtly guiding him into the way that would be best for him was a far different matter from what she had been planning up to last night's moonrise was as abysmally separated from its selfish hypocrisy as love from hate. She would persist in her purpose, but how changed the motive! She heard him stirring in her no, THEIR room. Her face lighted up, her eyes sparkled.
At length he whispered: "I've just seen such a wonderful thing I wish you'd been with me!" "What sort of a thing?" She turned her head with a faint show of interest. "A I don't know a vision.... It came to me out there just now with the moonrise." "A vision?" Her interest flagged. "I never cared much about spirits. Mother used to try to drag me to seances but they always made me sleepy."
