There are long, rambling, skeleton ranges with here and there pine forests gradually creeping up the sides to the crests. There are solitary volcanoes, now extinct, standing like things purposely let alone when nature humbled the surrounding earth. There are sculptured lime rocks, cities of them, with gray hovels and mansions and cathedrals. The mountains present one interesting geologic feature.

Since her arrival in the city many things had influenced her, but always in a far-removed manner. This new atmosphere was more friendly. It was wholly unlike the great brilliant mansions which waved her coldly away, permitting her only awe and distant wonder. This took her by the hand kindly, as one who says, "My dear, come in." It opened for her as if for its own.

The domicile of this chrysalis enchantress is a low frame house of two stories, standing back from the street, directly in the rear of another row of more pretentious mansions, as if it had been sent into the back yard in disgrace and never permitted to show itself in good society again. It seems conscious of its humiliation, and wears an air of architectural dejection that is quite touching.

For ordinary bathers, for all ladies, and for men less savage in their instincts than I am, the bathing at Newport is very good. The private houses villa residences as they would be termed by an auctioneer in England are excellent. There was never a tavern in Sheffield where the twang of his violin was unheard, and the skill wherewith he extorted music from a single string earned him the style and title of the modern Paganini. But such an employ was too mean for his pride, and he soon got to work again this time with a better success. The mansions of Sheffield were his early prey, and a rich plunder rewarded his intrepidity.

Forbes's residence could not be wholly accidental. When he had watched its persistent treading on his heels along Piccadilly its intent became almost unmistakable. The route to Innesmore Mansions traversed some of London's main arteries, but, despite the rush of traffic due to the first flight of homewardbound playgoers, the gray car kept steadily on his track.

"Come," he said, offering to embrace her. She started back in terror. "Do not tremble," he went on patronisingly; "you have nothing to fear from me, everything to expect. I am able to give you whatever you ask mansions, carriages, jewels, pleasures, unlimited wealth, unlimited power. These are in my hands. I rule Paris yes, France and shall rule Europe.

The streets are narrow and gloomy, from being lined with heavy and dark arcades; the houses, which are large, and bear marks of former opulence, are standing in many instances untenanted. Not a few stately mansions have been converted into stables, or carriers' sheds, or are simply naked walls, which the dogs of the city, or other creatures, make their den.

God has not said that there are mansions prepared for us if we pass our time associating with the rich, but He has said there are many mansions prepared for the servants of the poor, for the poor are very dear to God. The mercies and bounties of God are with them.

O Sion the golden! Our eyes are still holden, Thy light till we see. We know not, we know not, All human words show not The joys we may reach. The mansions preparing, The joys for our sharing, The welcome for each. Then Belle opened the door softly and went in. Pauline saw a large bay window opening into a tiny conservatory, which loving hands kept dowered with a profusion of blooming plants.
