The ideas of spirit are thinking and will, or a power of putting body into motion by thought, and, which is consequent to it, liberty. The ideas of existence, mobility, and duration are common to both. Locke's intelligence was clear enough to perceive that these two ideas, spirit and matter, stand on a similar footing.
Why, Sir, I should be undone; at this very moment that I am going here to fill up one place against a critick, I should have made an opening for a couple.
