In Locke's philosophy, the 'ideas, legitimate or illegitimate descendants of the Cartesian theories, play a most prominent part. Locke's admirable common sense made him the leader who embodied a growing tendency.
There was something in Locke's face that showed that he was in deadly earnest and not to be trifled with. Locke looked from one to the other, then turned to Old Tom. "The wounded man who was brought here," he demanded, "where is he?" "There 'ain't been no wounded man brought here," retorted Old Tom. The men crowded a little closer, all denying vehemently that any one had entered.
He drew his hand out with a partridge in it. He twisted its neck, and we started on again. "The partridges dive down into the snow, and sleep there, but I don't see why those two went to bed so late after the storm was over. Something must have disturbed them. If I hadn't the racket to clap over the place, I should have lost him. I learned that trick from Amos Locke's father.
Even when Jimmy told, in his essentially picturesque way, the story of John Locke's death, his brother-in-law merely remarked that such things were never allowed to occur in the British Empire, though, doubtless, they were to be expected under governments which had injured the market so greatly in the past by repudiating their bargains.
This sounds like high Platonic doctrine for a philosopher of the Left; but Locke's utilitarian temper very soon reasserted itself in this subject. Mathematical ideas were not only lucid but true: and he demanded this truth, which he called "reality", of all ideas worthy of consideration: mere ideas would be worthless.
There was the important difference that Locke's essay on Civil Government was the justification in theory of a revolution which had already been accomplished in practice, while the Social Contract, tinged as it was by silent reference in the mind of the writer to Geneva, was yet a speculation in the air.
Even Warburton ceased for a moment his habit of belittling all rivals in the field he considered his own to call him, in that Divine Legation which he considered his masterpiece, "the honor of this age and the instructor of the future"; but since Warburton's attack on the High Church theory is at every point Locke's argument, he may have considered this self-eulogy instead of tribute.
The footman came out smiling, "What did I want?" "I I Mr. Locke." "Well you needn't be in such a hurry!" "Mr. Locke's likely to be busy for a few minutes yet, I expect." Evidently the man did not know me. "Tell him that that a person wishes to speak to him on particular business." Though I had no more notion what that business was than the man himself. "Sit down in the hall."
And even in the special application of his principles to religion, it would be wrong to say that either of the two parties wholly diverged from Locke's position. For the fact is, there were two sides to Locke's mind a critical and rationalising side, and a reverent and devotional side.
But it is all a picture, prophesying what we might see through a sufficiently powerful microscope; the important philosophical question is the one raised by the other half of Locke's natural philosophy, by optics and the general criticism of perception. How far, if at all, may we trust the images in our minds to reveal the nature of external things?
