A small, leather-bound notebook, in which she had been engrossed, was tucked instantly away under the soiled blanket, and she glanced sharply around the garret. A new candle, which she had bought in the single excursion she had ventured to make from the house during the day, was stuck in the neck of the gin bottle, and burned now on the chair beside her.
He would have been reading some old leather-bound volume, and would have remained for hours almost as quiet and noiseless as the ghosts themselves. Now he had stepped across his threshold and joined them, and new spirits had come to burn the light in the old red house. Agatha, half-dressed, had slept, and woke feeling that the night must be far advanced.
"About two hundred dollars I'd saved up," replied Miss Daggett. "By now it would be a lot more with the interest." "Yes, of course," assented their hostess; "one should always think of interest in connection with savings." She appeared to be gazing rather attentively at the leather-bound prospectus Miss Daggett had withdrawn from her bag.
It was a little old leather-bound New Testament, sea-soaked; and between the leaves of it the Articles of War. The book fell open at the fly-leaf. On it three names were written, each in a different hand. Horatio Nelson, Christopher Caryll, William Harding. A bracket bound the three, and opposite the bracket, in the same hand as the first name, the words, England and Duty.
A cabin in the woods. Of it I have written before, and of it I write again. The same great fireplace piled high with logs fiercely ablaze. Again on either side of the fireplace are the hounds gazing meditatively into the fire. The same big table, and on it the same great book, leather-bound and worn by the hands of many generations.
They sat before the hearth fire in a semi-circle Caleb Thayer, his wife Deborah, his son Ephraim, and his daughter Rebecca. It was May, but it was quite cold; there had been talk of danger to the apple blossoms; there was a crisp coolness in the back of the great room in spite of the hearth fire. Caleb Thayer held a great leather-bound Bible on his knees, and was reading aloud in a solemn voice.
There was a large oak table with beautifully carved legs, piled with all sorts of modern reviews and magazines. A log fire was burning in the big oaken grate. The perfume from a great bowl of lavender seemed to mingle curiously yet pleasantly with the half musty odour of the old leather-bound volumes.
"I thought perhaps you would let me give you this," she said. "It isn't much; it isn't even new, and it has some marks in it; but I thought it might help with your new undertaking." Gardley took it with a lighting of his face and opened the box. In it was a little, soft, leather-bound Testament, showing the marks of usage, yet not worn.
During many of his mature years he had pondered as to how the welfare of community and State could be improved, and the result of that thought was embodied in the bills of which they had doubtless received copies. If not, down went their names in a leather-bound memorandum, and they got copies in the next mails.
He would not stay, he said, yet lingered by her side, talking for a few minutes, watching the sunset and pointing out its changes. She gave him the little package for Mom Wallis. There was a simple lace collar in a little white box, and a tiny leather-bound book done in russet suède with gold lettering. "Tell her to wear the collar and think of me whenever she dresses up."
