Whenever he came on any errand from the Lamonts he was always given a piece of cake or fruit anything sweet, for he had a child's taste. But although Bildy was supremely delighted, he seldom said more than "thank you, Ma'am!" I once suggested that she should refer to Val, and the experiment was successful in opening Bildy's mouth.
I was most anxious to accompany him, and we set out at once for the Lamonts' cottage. Bildy looked frightfully wasted; his face was the color of parchment, and his brown eyes looked enormously large and startlingly bright.
The Lamonts went abroad that night, and stayed there for quite six months, during which time Anne mended her broken heart and saw the folly of her ways. Hector and she had never alluded to the matter all these years, only they were intimate friends and understood each other. Lady Bracondale adored Hector and was fond of Anne, but had no comprehension of either.
"We adore it," says Mabel, emphatic. "Mr. Blueworthy," goes on the colonel, "will you sell us your home? I am prepared to pay a liberal price." Poor Asaph was kind of throwed on his beam ends, so's to speak. He hemmed and hawed, and finally had to blurt out that he didn't own the place. The Lamonts was astonished. The colonel wanted to know if it belonged to Mrs. Badger. "Why, no," says Ase.
MRS. H. I've a heavy score against you. Where were you at the Monday Pop? Where were you on Tuesday? Where were you at the Lamonts' tennis? I was looking everywhere. CAPT. G. For me! Oh, I was alive somewhere, I suppose. MRS. H. Have I done anything to offend you? I never meant it if I have. I couldn't help going for a ride with the Vaynor man. It was promised a week before you came up.
Well, he'd sailed one acrost the bay and got becalmed, and then the tide took him in amongst the shoals at the mouth of Wellmouth Crick, and there, owing to a mixup of tide, shoals, dark, and an overdose of foolishness, the boat had upset and foundered and the Lamonts had waded half a mile or so to shore.
"'Look here, I says to him; 'if you'd been worth a continental you might have had some of this. As it is, you'll be farmed out somewheres that's what'll happen to YOU." And as Zoeth was telling this, in comes Cap'n Benijah. He was happy, too. "I cal'late the Lamonts must be buying all the property alongshore," he says when he heard the news.
And she wanted papa to see 'em, too, so Ase led the way, like the talking man in the dime museum. And the way them Lamonts agonized over every rag mat, and corded bedstead was something past belief.
You have been talking about those rapids for two months. I thought that was what we came here for." "Do you want to run right into the smallpox at Montreal?" "Oh, I don't mind. I never take anything of that sort." "But don't you see that it isn't safe for the Lamonts and Mrs. Farquhar to go there?" "I suppose not; I never thought of that.
At one time she tried to furnish her with some orders for stockings, but it turned out that the Lamonts considered it next door to heresy to take payment from the priest's house, and Penny's charitable attempts were frustrated. "The very thing for the Lamonts!" exclaimed Val at breakfast one morning. He had been reading his letters, just delivered, and I was glancing through that day's paper.
