They looked on sin and death and hell with absorbing and overwhelming solemnity, and they set themselves with all their might to escape from these direst of evils. Pardon of sin, peace with God, a clean heart and a Christian character, all these things were their daily prayer; for these things they wrestled many a night like Jacob at the Jabbok.
Jacob had wrestled with God in that mysterious scene by the brook Jabbok, and had overcome, and had received instead of the name Jacob, 'a supplanter, the name of Israel, 'for as a Prince hast thou power with God and hast prevailed. And, says Christ: 'This man also is a son of Israel, one of God's warriors, who has prevailed with Him by prayer. 'In whom is no guile' Jacob in his early life had been marked and marred by selfish craft.
Besides the Jarmuk, another stream, the Jabbok, flows into the Jordan from this side. The Arnon empties into the Dead Sea. The northern section was called Bashan, the middle, Gilead, and the southern part, Moab. Bashan anciently had many cities, and numerous ruins yet remain. In the campaign of Israel against Og, king of Bashan, sixty cities were captured.
Moving away, she stopped by the camel, and touched its front face with her lips. "O thou noblest of thy kind! that, because there is no suspicion in thy love." An instant, and she was gone. From Aroer, which is by the brink of the river of Arnon, and from the city that is by the river, even unto Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us: the LORD our God delivered all unto us: Only unto the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not, nor unto any place of the river Jabbok, nor unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto whatsoever the LORD our God forbad us.
At all events, when we think of Jacob by the brook Jabbok, and of a 'greater than our father Jacob' by the brook Kedron, we may well learn what persistence, what earnestness and effort of the whole nature, go to make up the ideal of prayer, and may well blush for the miserable indifference and torpor of what we venture to call our prayers.
Was it the prospect of this dreaded meeting that brought upon Jacob the night of lonely struggle by the Brook Jabbok?
For he said to himself, "I will please him with the present that goes before me, and then, when I meet him, perhaps he will welcome me." So he sent the present over before him; but he himself spent that night in the camp. Later that night he rose up and took his two wives, his two maid servants, and his eleven children, and sent them over the river Jabbok.
