Scis ut illi nil cum adultero, sic nihil tibi esse debere cum pellice. Antoninus Pius gave a husband a bill for adultery against his wife "Provided it is established that by your life you give her an example of fidelity. It would be unjust that a husband should demand a fidelity which he does not himself keep" quoted by St. Augustine, de Conj. Adult., ii, ch. 8.
The Werthers and Jacopo Ortis do not only exist in romances; Europe produces every year at least half-a-dozen like them: sed ignotis perierunt mortibus illi: for their sufferings are chronicled by the writer of official registers or by the reporters of newspapers. Indeed, readers of the police news in English and French newspapers will confirm what I have said.
He will rather use 'olli' than 'illi', 'optume' than 'optima', and any bad word rather than any good one, provided he can but prove, that strictly speaking, it is Latin; that is, that it was written by a Roman.
Between this pair of friends the superiority of wit lay, almost from the very first, on the younger man's side; but, on the other hand, Clive felt a tender admiration for his father's goodness, a loving delight in contemplating his elder's character, which he has never lost, and which in the trials of their future life inexpressibly cheered and consoled both of them! Yet all this, and more, happens in Latin. Illa alba femina quae venit and illi albi homines qui veniunt, conceptually translated, amount to this: that-one-feminine-doer one-feminine-white-doer feminine-doing-one-woman which-one-feminine-doer other -one-now-come; and: that-several-masculine-doer several-masculine-white-doer masculine-doing-several-man which-several-masculine-doer other-several-now-come.
The latter half of the commandment, I think, shows what is meant. `Non adorabis ea, neque coles' `thou shalt not worship them. At the same time, Saint Paul saith, `Omne autem, quod non est ex fide, peccatum est' `all that is not of faith is sin; and `nisi ei qui existimat quid commune esse, illi commune est': namely, `to him who esteemeth a thing unclean, to him it is unclean. If thou really believest it sin, by no means allow thyself to do it."
For they are the first, that find their own griefs, though they be the last, that find their own faults. Next follows the healing of the paralytic, which was done in fulfilment of Is. xxxv. 2.
Here all was based on a noble permanence of taste, a convergence of accumulated effort toward a chosen end; and the door was fittingly surmounted by Seneca's definition of the wise man's state: "Omnia illi secula ut deo serviunt." Odo would gladly have lingered among the books which filled the rooms with an incense-like aroma of old leather.
