It was only in the press, in the pulpit, at the bar, and in the legislature that we can look for evidences of intellectual development. The only original literary works of importance were those of Judge Haliburton, who had already given us the clever, humorous creation of "Sam Slick," and also written an excellent history of Nova Scotia.

Wilberforce, seeing that it filled three folio volumes, to abridge it. This abridgement was made by the different friends of the cause. William Burgh, esquire, of York; Thomas Babington, esquire, of Rothley Temple; the Reverend Thomas Gisborne, of Yoxall Lodge; Mr. Campbell Haliburton, of Edinburgh; George Harrison, with one or two others of the committee, and myself, were employed upon it.

His grandfather, his mother's father, was a "volunteer"-boy, preparing to be midshipman, on the Serapis, and he knew he had heard him speak of Duval! Oh, how we all screamed! It was so like Ingham! Haliburton asked him if his grandfather was not best-man when Denis married Agnes. Fausta asked him if he would not continue the novel in the "Cornhill."

Of course old Haliburton, the lawyer, had a hand in it, but without my personal energy it would have taken him a year longer. What do you think of the girls? How do you like Bella? 'A pretty child. 'Child? Well, yes, yes immature of course; but I'm rather in the habit of thinking of her as a young lady. In three years she'll be seventeen, you know.

She risked Dennis one night under the eyes of her own sex. Governor Gorges had always been very kind to us; and when he gave his great annual party to the town, asked us. I confess I hated to go. I was deep in the new volume of Pfeiffer's Mystics, which Haliburton had just sent me from Boston. "But how rude," said Polly, "not to return the Governor's civility and Mrs.

I was standing in the doorway of the spacious ball-room with a circle of new-made gentlemen acquaintances around me; my father and his wife stood a short distance from me and watched the proceedings without looking at them. "May I have the fifth Miss Hampden," the very good-looking Mr. Haliburton was asking with a smile. "What is the dance?" I interrupted as he was about to scribble his initials.

Haliburton Almond, senior partner in the old and well-known firm of Almond Brothers, the manufacturers of fireworks. The marriage may take place in November, and will doubtless be a brilliant as well as a most interesting affair. By-the-bye, Mr.

Andrew's; and upon their not presenting themselves, he and Sir Simon Frisel, or Fraser, were pronounced outlaws. For some time his retreat remained undiscovered, although his active hostility still continued occasionally to make itself felt. A principal person employed in the attempts to capture him appears to have been Ralph de Haliburton; but how he was actually taken is not known.

Thomas Chandler Haliburton was born at Windsor, Nova Scotia, in 1796, was educated at King's College, and admitted to the bar in 1820. He entered political life shortly after, and was elected member of the House of Assembly. In 1829 he was appointed Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas, and in 1840 was made Judge of the Supreme Court.

Haliburton sings, or we sit on the stoup and hear the crickets sing; but when there is a new Trollope or Thackeray, alas, there will never be another new Thackeray! all else has always been set aside till we have read that aloud. When I began the last sentence of the last Thackeray that ever was written, Ingham jumped out of his seat, and cried,
