His chaotic brain is aware only of its mad purpose. Suddenly the bush parts. There stands the store of Victor Gagnon in the bright light of day. Swift to the door he speeds, but pauses as he finds it locked. The pause is brief. A shot from his pistol shatters the lock, the door flies open at his touch, and he passes within.

He had round, ruddy cheeks, looking as if the half of an apple had been glued to each side of his face, and a spreading, crinkly brown beard. "Bienvenue! Bienvenue!" Cried Johnny Gagnon with sweeping obeisances. "Well, Johnny, have you got a new one for me?" asked his lordship with a twinkle.

On the top of the stove stood a tin billy full to the brim of steaming coffee, the scent of which, blending with the reek of strong tobacco, came soothingly to their nostrils. Victor Gagnon was lying full length upon a pile of outspread blankets. His face was turned towards the stove, and his head was supported upon one hand. He looked none the worse for his adventure in the storm.

Superintendent Gagnon, who understood their language well, reported as to Riel's presence and the discontent of the half-breeds more than once. The causes of the discontent were not far to seek. Many of the half-breeds on the South Saskatchewan were the same who had taken part in Riel's first rebellion on the Red River fifteen years before. They were not people of a settled temperament.

Larue and M. Ernest Gagnon have given us a compilation of this interesting feature of French Canadian literature, which is hardly yet familiar to the English population of Canada. Other French Canadian names occur to the writer, but it is impossible to do justice to them in this necessarily limited review.

Nick spoke dubiously, like a man who does not convince himself. "Hah, that's 'cause you've never been to a city," said the Breed sharply. "Jest so," observed Ralph quietly, between the puffs at his pipe. Gagnon laughed silently. His eyes were very bright and he looked from one brother to the other with appreciation.

Some one will buy it. "Gaviller himself got to buy when he see we mean to stand together. He has made contracts to send flour to the far north. Who wants to speak?" A little man of marked French characteristics sprang to his feet. His eyes flashed. "I speak!" he cried. "This Jean Bateese Gagnon," explained Simon to Ambrose. "Simon Grampierre say wait!" cried the little man passionately.

Then with a leap he was on his feet and wide-awake, and the name of Victor Gagnon fell from his lips. A frenzied, unreasoning desire to take the trader's life possessed him. His body was refreshed and the blank of memory had passed from him. A gleam of reason shot athwart the racked brain. It was only for an instant, then it was gone again. But that instant sufficed.

To this household it was the greatest day in the year, and the sun was shining like the shiniest-cheeked Gagnon of them all. The younger children kept careful watch on Sam. He was an attraction fortuitously added to the big show. Johnny Gagnon himself was the most excited of the family. "You come jus' right!" he was continually exclaiming to Jack. "They stop all day now. Have trial in my house.

They all looked straight before them in speaking, and yet what they said seemed to be for Maria alone, as if the dear secret of her heart were open to them. But she spoke not, nor moved, her eyes fixed upon the frosted panes of the little window, impenetrable as the wall. Eutrope Gagnon did not linger. The Chapdelaines, left to themselves, were long without speech.
