There is another form of the same monogram which signifies DCVIII. These devices although in use hundreds of years prior to the Christian era are all said to be monograms of Christ. At the present time they may be seen in almost every church in Italy. In the cave of Elephanta, in India, appears the cross in connection with the figure which represents male reproductive power.
The caves of Elephanta and Canara are well worthy of your attention and I shall be happy to attend you, when you feel inclined to pay a visit to them." They did not fail to profit by the offer, and before the week had passed away, they had witnessed those splendid monuments of superstition and idolatry.
The small-pox must be very bad, for I see some one being carried to the hospital every minute." The picturesque trees, the coloured temples, and the Parsee palaces, garnished for weddings, also impressed themselves upon my mind. The next day we made an excursion to see the Caves of Elephanta. These caves are on an island about an hour's steaming from Bombay.
In Bombay, every language of the civilized world is to be heard, and the costumes and habits of every nation are to be seen. The finest view of the whole island and town of Bombay, as well as the neighbouring islands of Salsette, Elephanta, Kolabeh, Caranjah, and the mainland, is to be had from the Malabar point.
In thought and customs, Bombay is still essentially Oriental, while yet profoundly influenced by modern newspapers and modern inventions. It was a memorable change for us travelers to emerge from its Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, and then to find ourselves, first in its Caves of Elephanta, and secondly, in its Towers of Silence.
It is readily seen how fully these views are substantiated by observations from a number of independent sources. In a book of Travel in India we are able from an independent source to learn of the symbolism of that country. The traveller gives a description of the caves of Elephanta, near Bombay.
Eusebius says that at Elephanta they adored a Deity in the figure of a man in a sitting posture painted blue, having the head of a ram with the horns of a goat encircling a disk. The Deity thus described is said to be of astronomical origin, denoting the power of the sun in Aries. This figure, which was one of the representations of the sun-god Crishna, was worshipped both in India and in Egypt.
The dwellers on the sides of Vesuvius do not lie awake to wait for its eruption, and the dwellers on Elephanta do not step any more gingerly in their bare feet because at any moment a sting may end their career. If "Death stalketh abroad at noonday," we always imagine he is on his way to some other fireside; ours is not to be invaded. But the captain needed no warning.
One had a great success and was freely copied the sincerest flattery and the preface to the annual for 1840 publicly thanked the "gifted writer" for his "valuable aid." At the beginning of 1839 he went into new rooms vacated by Mr. Meux, and set to work finally on "Salsette and Elephanta."
Hence different observers vary in their estimates of the importance of sectarian divisions, some holding that sect is the essence of modern Hinduism and others that most educated Hindus do not worship a sectarian deity. The Kûrma Purâṇa, Part I. chap. It is highly probable that the celebrated image at Elephanta is not a Trimûrti at all but a Maheśamûrti of Śiva. See Gopinâtha Rao, Hindu Iconog.
