Leaving out of count such systematic, and apparently scientific, labours as those of the ants, bees, and wasps, we constantly find in the animal kingdom powers being exercised, as, for instance, in the case of the earthworms and the moles, that are not to be explained by the use of the words instinct, intelligence, and necessity.

As suddenly as he had started, he stopped and turned, leaving Tom and Roger staring at him, startled by this unusual outburst. "Cadets stand to!" roared a voice from the doorway. The three cadets snapped to attention and faced the entrance. "Take it easy, Earthworms!" said Tony Richards. A tall cadet with closely cut black hair and a lazy, smiling face stood in the doorway.

Dirt and drains, Catherine says I have gone mad upon them. It's all very well, but they are the foundations of a sound religion. 'Dirt, drains, and Darwin, said Langham meditatively, taking up Darwin's Earthworms, which lay on the study table beside him, side by side with a volume of Grant Allen's Sketches. 'I didn't know you cared for this sort of thing!

Of all the talks, the one that caught my attention was the talk given by Dr Sultan Ismail on earthworms. I have refrained from giving details of Dr Ismail's talk here because I have a full chapter on my association with his work later in this book. The next morning the same sort of programme continued. However there was a farmer's session which was chaired by my father.

He is angry with me because I do not look people in the face and speak out, but I know I am not looking after earthworms." Yes. He had told her that. A shiver seized him at the recollection. Then it came to a period when the words: "Richard kissed me," stood by themselves, and marked a day in her life. Afterwards it was solemnly discovered that Richard wrote poetry.

She looked like a splendid plume dropped from the starry wing of night. "The stars make you feel that way," he said, in the light tone that disguises a compliment as a bit of raillery, "because you're of their family. And I feel as I do because I'm a blood-relation of the earthworms." Her face changed. "Oh, but so am I!" she exclaimed, with a passion he had never seen or suspected in her before.

A few score years ago, sick people were made to swallow burnt toads and powdered earthworms and the expressed juice of wood-lice. The physician of Charles I. and II. prescribed abominations not to be named. Barbarism, as bad as that of Congo or Ashantee. Traces of this barbarism linger even in the greatly improved medical science of our century.

Perhaps he will love me better now he is married. Mama says they must be separated. That is shameful. If I can help him I will. I pray so that he may be happy. I hope God hears poor sinners' prayers. I am very sinful. Nobody knows it as I do. They say I am good, but I know. When I look on the ground I am not looking after earthworms, as he said. Oh, do forgive me, God!"

Some even have gone so far as to say that God acts thus indeed; and on the plea that we are as nothing in comparison with him, they liken us to earthworms which men crush without heeding as they walk, or in general to animals that are not of our species and which we do not scruple to ill-treat.

Earthworms have proven that they are wonderful creatures for they can truly turn garbage into gold.
