Once more; not only is there in men this baffling duality of principle, but there is something else in us which still more defies scientific analysis. Mr. Buckle would deliver himself from the eccentricities of this and that individual by a doctrine of averages. No doubt it is a comforting discovery. Unfortunately, the average of one generation need not be the average of the next.
From an imperfect recognition of that duality ensue great masses of misconception. That was the substance of "First and Last Things." In this present book there is no further attack on philosophical or metaphysical questions. Here we work at a less fundamental level and deal with religious feeling and religious ideas.
From the duality of creation, there cannot be identity between the physical and moral laws; but from the unity of the Creator there must be similarity.
They were human; which means, subject to human duality, to cycles of light, and cycles of darkness. The centuries after the sixth B.C. were, as we have seen, a cycle of growing darkness for most of the world.
Gladstone that "even among happy marriages her marriage was exceptional, so nearly did the union of thought, heart, and action both fulfil the ideal and bring duality near to the borders of identity." And so twenty years went on, full of an ever-growing popularity, and a purifying influence on the tone of society never fully realized till the personal presence was withdrawn.
The period of our duality should be one as irresponsible in your eyes as that of our infancy. Is he we call a young man an individual who is a pair of alternately kicking scales? Is he educated, when he dreams not that he is divided?
How does Christian Science explain the spiritual relation of systematic duality to incidental deflection?" "Christian Science reverses the seeming relation of Soul and body as astronomy reverses the human perception of the movement of the solar system and makes body tributary to the Mind.
We have to consider this duality as gradually elaborated, and the problem concerning it must be first stated, and then solved as a function of time rather than of space. Our representation begins by being impersonal, and it is only later that it adopts our body as centre. We emerge gradually from universal reality, and our realising roots are always sunk in it.
Because the poet is drawn equally to this world and to the other world, shall we characterize him as a hybrid creature, and assert that an irreconcilable discord is in his soul? We shall prove ourselves singularly deaf to concord if we do so. Poets have been telling us over and over again that the distinctive element in the poetic nature is harmony. What is harmony? It is the reconciliation of opposites, says Eurymachus in the Symposium. It is union of the finite and the infinite, says Socrates in the Philebus. Do the poet's desires point in opposite directions? But so, it seems, do the poplars that stand tiptoe, breathless, at the edge of the dreaming pool. The whole secret of the aesthetic repose lies in the duality of the poet's desire. His imagination enables him to see all life as two in one, or one in two; he leaves us uncertain which. His imagination reflects the spiritual in the sensual and the sensual in the spiritual till we cannot tell which is the more tangible or the more meaningful. We sought unity in the poetic character, but we can reduce a nature to complete and barren unity only by draining it of imagination, and it is imagination which enables the poet to find aesthetic unity in the two worlds of sense and spirit, where the rest of us can see only conflict. There is a little poem, by Walter Conrad Arensberg, which is to me a symbol of this power of reflection which distinguishes the poetic imagination. It is called Voyage
As a basis for this forecast it is necessary first of all briefly to classify the expression of the building impulse from what may be called the psychological point of view. Broadly speaking, there are not five orders of architecture nor fifty but only two: Arranged and Organic. These correspond to the two terms of that "inevitable duality" which bisects life.
