It is easy to make a country strong and rich but it is difficult to establish a constitutional government. When a constitutional government has been established, everything will take care of itself, prosperity following naturally enough. The adoption of a constitutional government at the present moment can be compared to the problem of a derailed train.
Like so many whom God had endowed with His gifts, he ventured too far and sought to rival God Himself. But here the brakes were clapped on, and the whole project was nearly derailed. For a long time he took it greatly to heart, but when the work was completed he rejoiced.
But at last Jawn, standing in the cab of his derailed locomotive, saw something that made him call quickly to Mallory. "They've started," he said. "Where are they?" "Comin' up through the woods." Mallory glanced quickly about and said, "We're flanked. There's no good in staying here, is there?" "The baggage car'll hold together for a while, and the other train ought to be here now."
Finding little to hold him in the spectacle of the derailed locomotive, Blount strolled on through the railroad yard to the station and the town. He remembered the place chiefly by its name. In his boyhood it had been the nearest railroad forwarding-point for the mines at Lewiston, thirty miles beyond the Lost Hills. Now, as it appeared, it had become a lumber-shipping station.
What upheaval can possibly have derailed him?" "Does he not explain?" Holmes handed me his brother's telegram. Must see you over Cadogen West. Coming at once. Mycroft. "Cadogen West? I have heard the name." "It recalls nothing to my mind. But that Mycroft should break out in this erratic fashion! A planet might as well leave its orbit. By the way, do you know what Mycroft is?"
He heard the blow, and the oath that went with it, and she saw him run forward to wrench the bludgeon from the bully's hands and fling it afar. What words emphasized the act she could not hear, but the little deed of swift justice thrilled her curiously, and her heart warmed to him as it had when he had thrown off his coat to fall to work on the derailed engine of the Limited.
"We really cannot say how late she will be, Miss Nora. I may tell you, but we are not saying anything about it, that there has been an accident." "An accident!" exclaimed Nora. "Why, we are expecting " "No, there is no one hurt. A freight has been derailed, and torn up the track a bit. The passenger train is held up just beyond Fairfield.
"It was a shock to me to learn that Andy O'Malley was right there on the spot when the accident happened." "And his employer, too," added Ned. "For we must admit that Mr. Montagne Lewis is the man who sicked O'Malley on to you." "True." "And they were both in the accommodation that was sideswiped by the derailed cars of Number Forty-eight." "That, likewise is a fact," said Tom, nodding quickly.
Fighting squadrons soon caught the craze for ground stunts and carried it well beyond the lines. One machine chased a train for miles a few hundred feet above, derailed it, and spat bullets at the lame coaches until driven off by enemy craft. Another made what was evidently an inspection of troops by some Boche Olympian look like the riotous disorder of a Futurist painting.
Nora took the yellow slip and read: "Delayed by derailed freight. Time of arrival uncertain. Very sorry, Jane." "What do you think of this?" cried Nora, carrying the telegram out to the car. "Isn't it perfectly exasperating? That takes off one of their nights." "Where is the accident?" inquired Mrs. Waring-Gaunt. "Just above Fairfield." "Fairfield! The poor things!
