Born in Nunda, N. Y. Studied under Agnes D. Abbatt at Cooper Union and at the Art Students' League, New York; in Paris under Harry Thompson and at Delécluse and Colarossi Academies. Mrs. Cooper's work is principally in water-colors.

Peter Cooper's particular device was a plan to do away with the crank, and transform the rectilinear motion of the piston into rotary motion. He figured it out that this would save two-fifths of the steam, and so stated in his application for a patent, a copy of which is before the writer. The Patent Office then was looked after by the President in person.

"You are an honor to your country, young fellow," exclaimed the stranger; "there is the material in you to make one of Cooper's redskins." As he said these words he threw a piece of money into the child's cap and walked rapidly away in the direction indicated.

He knew all about Walden Pond; and he knew his Emerson and was mad with passion to see the man; he had travelled over the world with Scott; had crossed the bridge with Cæsar in his father's books; had roamed the prairie and the woods with Cooper's Indians; had gone into the hearts of men with Thackeray and Dickens, holding his mother's hand and listening to her voice; but he knew algebra only as a name, and rhetoric was a dictionary word with him.

Good taste and good manners would not be conspicuous if all around possessed the same manners." Still painting. Thoughts on art. Picture of the Louvre. Rejection as painter of one of the pictures in the Capitol. John Quincy Adams. James Fenimore Cooper's article. Death blow to his artistic ambition. Washington Allston's letter. Commission by fellow artists. Definite abandonment of art.

Meanwhile that these unfortunate men were slowly starving to death on Cooper's Creek, parties were soon to be dispatched from north, south and east in quest of them. Left at the depot on Cooper's Creek, Brahe remained from the 14th of December, 1860, until the 21st of April, 1861. Before leaving he buried, as before stated, a small supply of provisions and a note, which in full ran:

Wills objected and so did King, but ultimately both gave in, and this was the death warrant of two of them. The following paper was placed in the depot by Burke before starting: "Depot No. 2, Cooper's Creek, Camp 65. We proceed on to-morrow slowly down the creek to Adelaide, by Mount Hopeless, and shall endeavour to follow Gregory's track, but we are very weak.

Cooper himself could not have hoped for much success for his strictures. In fact, he expressly declared the contrary. Notwithstanding the ferocious criticism with which they were assailed at the time and the forgetfulness into which they have now fallen, Cooper's accounts of the countries in which he lived are among the best of their kind.

"If you believe that, Gertrude, it is because you do not know. You will have friends all around you and I shall be alone in a foreign land; but every day of my life my heart will be with you and my mother." They were now interrupted by Mr. Cooper's return, nor did they afterwards renew the conversation; but the morning Willie left them, when Mrs.

Some personal animosity had grown out of their desire to convince each other. Cooper had once even meditated Mike's conversion, and Mike never missed an opportunity of telling some story which he deemed destructive of Cooper's faith.
