It was now apparent that the fort could not be taken without a regular investment and in view of the lateness of the season this was not deemed advisable. The Massachusetts historian Mather quaintly observes, "The difficulty of the cold season so discouraged our men that after some few shot the enterprize found itself under too much congelation to proceed any further."
