All was hubbub, barking dogs, shouting men, and Hal scarcely knew anything till he was aware of two or three shrouded nuns, as it seemed, standing by their ponies, of merchantmen or carters trying to quiet and harness frightened mules, of waggons overturned, of a general confusion over which arose Lord Musgrave's powerful authoritative voice. 'Kit of Clumber!

When Betty looked at Clumber House, across a pretty little lake, she only said: "Perhaps near that lake was where Robin found Alan-a-Dale, the dear minstrel." "Oh, no, Betty; it was by a fountain that he found Alan-a-Dale," Barbara politely corrected. "Yes, that's so, Barbara," Betty replied, in all seriousness. "I forgot."

It was this cluster of the homes of the nobility that gave it the name of "The Dukeries." Both Welbeck and Clumber belonged to the Dukes of Newcastle at one time; but to elucidate their settlement upon these vast estates and the subsequent division of the domains, through marriage, we must take up the thread of Bess Hardwick's machinations.

Baillie's party made their way to the mouth of the Fish River, where, it was said, the `Head' had been allowed to choose a territory, and where he hoped to realise imaginations of commercial wealth by founding a seaport town. And the Duke of Newcastle's proteges from Nottingham took possession of the beautiful vale of Clumber, naming it in honour of their noble patron.

As a sporting dog, the Clumber is possessed of the very best of noses, a natural inclination both to hunt his game and retrieve it when killed, great keenness and perseverance wonderful endurance and activity considering his massive build, and as a rule is very easy to train, being highly intelligent and more docile and "biddable."

The owner of Clumber is the lineal representative of the family of Pelham-Clinton which first appeared prominently in the reign of Edward I. and is Henry Pelham Alexander Pelham-Clinton, sixth Duke of Newcastle.

The following distinct breeds or varieties are recognised by the Kennel Club: Irish Water Spaniels; Water Spaniels other than Irish; Clumber Spaniels; Sussex Spaniels; Field Spaniels; English Springers; Welsh Springers; Cocker Spaniels.

"CLUMBER, "6 Jany. 1863. "I have received several letters from you without sending any answer; but I must confess I am so disheartened about the result of all the trouble I have taken with the 'delegates, that I do not know how to proceed, or, rather, I do not see the possibility of proceeding at all.

The lake at Welbeck is three miles long, and its waters are supplied from an irrigation system at Clipstone, costing the fourth Duke 80,000l. to carry out, draining a tract of marshy land and making it one of the most fertile districts in England. After supplying the lake at Welbeck the stream flows to that at Clumber.
