In a note addressed from the Library of the House of Commons, I asked for an interview, which was somewhat stiffly granted. This was the note which led to our interview: "CLUMBER, "1 Decr. 1856.
His abiding-place is now divided up into magnificent estates, the most famous of them being known as "The Dukeries." One of them, near Ollerton, is Thoresby Hall, the splendid home of the Earl of Manvers, a park that is ten miles in circumference. North of this is the stately seat of the Duke of Newcastle Clumber Park charmingly situated between Ollerton and Worksop.
The next day I had the following: "CLUMBER, "9 Decr. 1862. "It is no easy matter to give any advice as to what should be done, especially as I do not know whether Mr. Gladstone is still in London, though I rather imagine he has left for Hawarden. "If Mr. Howe and Tilley to see Mr. Gladstone, perhaps with you; but I can neither recommend them to see him with or without Mr.
"I don't think I should have guessed it now," he said, "only for the spring. To think you are Mary!" He lingered over the name. "I am sorry about the Clumber. You shall have another when you ask for it." It was a long drive westward. They got down at Kensington Church, and went up the hill. Close by the Carmelites they turned into a little alley.
The points and general description of the breed as published by both the Spaniel Club and the Clumber Spaniel Club are identical. They are as follows: HEAD Large, square and massive, of medium length, broad on top, with a decided occiput; heavy brows with a deep stop; heavy freckled muzzle, with well developed flew. EYES Dark amber; slightly sunk. A light or prominent eye objectionable.
I suggested a longer term, and also, that the interest on the annual put-by, to accumulate, should be altered so as to alleviate the burden. In answer to a letter written with the assistance of Messrs. Howe and Tilley, I received the following from the Duke: "CLUMBER, "8 Decr. 1862.
"I thought there were no doors. I was going to see the gardens while Lady Anne and Lady Drummond talked." "Let me come with you," the boy said eagerly. "I don't know how anybody stays in the house on such a day. Do you like puppies? I have a beautiful litter of Clumber spaniels. And I should like you to see my pony. I have just been out on him.
Clumber is rich in ornaments, among them being four ancient Roman altars, but the most striking feature is the full-rigged ship which with a consort rests upon the placid bosom of the lake. Adjoining Clumber Park is the most celebrated of "The Dukeries," Welbeck Abbey, which is one of the remarkable estates of England, a place peculiar to itself.
About this time Walpole speaks of Clumber being "still in leading-strings". The building was finished about 1770, and is of white freestone, pleasantly age-coloured, with a south front that opens to a formal and beautiful Italian garden with terraced walks and graceful marble fountains. Beyond, reached by stone staircases, spreads the great lake, which covers eighty-seven acres.
