And besides, thou countest est his service better than mine; whereas he never came yet from the place where he is, to deliver any that serve him out of my hands; but as for me, how many times, as all the world very well knows, have I delivered, either by power or fraud, those that have faithfully served me, from him and his, though taken by them. And so I will deliver thee. Chr.

CHR. With a very good will, and I am glad that you are so well disposed. PIETY. What moved you at first to betake yourself to a pilgrim's life? CHR. I was driven out of my native country, by a dreadful sound that was in mine ears; to wit, that unavoidable destruction did attend me, if I abode in that country place where I was.

Is this the way to the Celestial City? Shep. You are just in your way. Chr. How far is it thither? Shep. Too far for any but those who shall get thither, indeed. Chr. Is the way safe, or dangerous? Shep. Safe for those for whom it is to be safe; but transgressors shall fall therein. Chr. Is there in this place any relief for pilgrims that are weary and faint in the way? Shep.

HOPE. Now, I have showed you the reasons of their going back, do you show me the manner thereof. CHR. So I will, willingly. They draw off their thoughts, all that they may, from the remembrance of God, death, and judgment to come. Then they cast off by degrees private duties, as closet prayer, curbing their lusts, watching, sorrow for sin, and the like.

CHR. Even as I have said concerning ourselves, when our thoughts of God do agree with what the Word saith of Him; and that is, when we think of His being and attributes as the Word hath taught, of which I cannot now discourse at large; but to speak of Him with reference to us: Then we have right thoughts of God, when we think that He knows us better than we know ourselves, and can see sin in us when and where we can see none in ourselves; when we think He knows our inmost thoughts, and that our heart, with all its depths, is always open unto His eyes; also, when we think that all our righteousness stinks in His nostrils, and that, therefore, He cannot abide to see us stand before Him in any confidence, even in all our best performances.

Whence come you, and whither are you bound? Chr. I am come from the City of Destruction, which is the place of all evil, and I am going to the city of Zion. Apol. By this I perceive that thou art one of my subjects; for all that country is mine, and I am the prince and god of it. How is it, then, that thou hast run away from thy king?

CHR. Nay, she did not promise you the content of a good conscience. FAITH. You know what I mean; all carnal and fleshly content. FAITH. Nay, I know not whether I did wholly escape her or no. CHR. Why, I trow you did not consent to her desires? Then she railed on me, and I went my way. CHR. Did you meet with no other assault as you came?

Now there were on the tops of these mountains, shepherds feeding their flocks, and they stood by the highway side. And whose be the sheep that feed upon them? CHR. Is this the way to the Celestial City? SHEP. You are just in your way. CHR. How far is it thither? SHEP. Too far for any but those that shall get thither indeed. CHR. Is the way safe or dangerous?

CHR. My brother, I did not put the question to thee, for that I doubted of the truth of our belief myself, but to prove thee, and to fetch from thee a fruit of the honesty of thy heart. As for this man, I know that he is blinded by the god of this world. HOPE. Now do I rejoice in hope of the glory of God. So they turned away from the man; and he, laughing at them, went his way.

Then Apollyon broke out into a grievous rage, saying, I am an enemy to this Prince; I hate his person, his laws, and people; I am come out on purpose to withstand thee. Chr. Apollyon, beware what you do, for I am in the king's highway, the way of holiness; therefore take heed to yourself. Then Apollyon straddled quite over the whole breadth of the way, and said, I am void of fear in this matter.
