To get them off her mind that she might work uninterruptedly at learning Lola's part in "Cavalleria," she toiled all Saturday, far into Sunday morning, was astir before Spenser waked, finished the dress soon after breakfast and the hat by the middle of the afternoon. When Spenser returned from Sperry's office to take her to dinner, she was arrayed.
Meanwhile " He rummaged among a lot of paper bound plays on the table "Here's 'Cavalleria Rusticana. Read it with a view to yourself as either Santuzzao or Lola. Study her first entrance what you would do with it. Don't be frightened. I expect nothing from you nothing whatever. I'm glad you know nothing about acting. You'll have the less to unlearn." They had been moving towards the elevator.
So instead of sherry with the soup, they ordered the intermezzo from "Cavalleria Rusticana." With the fish we had the overture to "William Tell." With the entrecôte we had a pot-pourri from "Faust." With the fowl we had "Demon and Tamar," the Russian opera.
Finish the tale first." And so Taltavull went on. The uncanny sights which he had witnessed impressed the Cavalleria fisherman mightily, and when he received a valuable banknote, he helped fill up the hole and departed, fully determined to hold his tongue.
But to see her after the Santuzza of Duse, in Verga's "Cavalleria Rusticana," is to realise the difference between this art of the animal and Duse's art of the soul. And if one thinks of Réjane's "Sapho," the difference is hardly less, though of another kind.
Likewise the Player of the Big Drum made more than one big hit during the evening. "Che farò" was re-demanded. "Tired of 'Faro," quoth Mr. WAGGSTAFF "why not make it 'Whisto, or some other game?" Exit WAGGY. The Intermezzo of Cavalleria Rusticana of course encored enthusiastically. "Signor CREMONNINI," quoth WAGG, returning, "is not half the 'ninny' his name implies." Sir Druriolanus. Tuesday.
But the fact remained that Cavalleria Rusticana flourished at the Opera Comique, and Pagliacci at the Opera: Massenet and Gounod were more frequently performed than anybody else, and the musical trinity Mignon, Les Huguenots, and Faust had safely crossed the bar of the thousandth performance. But these were only trivial accidents: there was no need to go and see them.
Cavalry is, of course, the name for horse soldiers, and the Italian word cavalleria, from which it comes, was itself derived from the Latin word caballus, "a horse." The general weapon for a cavalryman is the "sabre," a sword with a curved blade. This, again, comes to us from the French, but was probably originally an Eastern word.
His sudden popularity, however, had a pernicious effect, as it induced him to rush out more operas without giving sufficient time to their preparation. "L'Amico Fritz," based upon the well-known Erckmann-Chatrian story, and "I Rantzau" quickly followed "Cavalleria Rusticana," but did not meet with its success.
Umberto Giordano, who during the last few years has steadily worked his way to the front rank of Italian composers, started his career with a succès de scandale in 'Mala Vita' , a coarse and licentious imitation of 'Cavalleria Rusticana. There is far better work in 'Andrea Chénier' , a stirring tale of the French Revolution set to music which shows uncommon dramatic power and in certain scenes a fine sense of lyrical expression.
