Hilyard seemed to be invested, and she had sometimes wondered how Eliot was able to resist it and treat her with the same cool detachment which he accorded to other people. To her there was something magnetic in Cara's personality. Perhaps her very silence about herself, and the vague background of an unhappy marriage of which Ann was dimly aware, contributed towards it.
A faint hope stirred in Cara's heart. Perhaps, if she yielded to his wishes now, without further argument, she might be able, later on, to induce him to reconsider his decision to persuade him to be merciful. He seemed to read her thoughts with an uncanny insight. "You'll stay?" he said. She nodded, and he helped off the heavy fur wrap she was wearing.
Then he pressed the bell-push and, when Achille appeared, gave a curt order for supper to be served. As the Frenchman departed his quick eyes flickered a moment over Cara's beautiful face and milk-white shoulders. Decidedly, he reflected, his master had good taste.
Von Ritz had long since drifted into the smoking-room where the men were christening the voyage with brandy-and-soda and dropping into tentative groups, regardful of future poker games. Pagratide, at Cara's elbow, was silent, respecting her silence. When at last the two had the deck to themselves and Manhattan had become a shadowy and ragged monotone, she turned and smiled.
At one time and another, either with the doctors, or without them, Darvid entered Cara's chamber; where, in obedience to medical advice, they had not darkened the great windows through which light was pouring in its golden torrents.
But in vain did she put her ear almost down to Cara's lips, not a sound, not a whisper, she only turned her face away farther, while her breath grew in hoarseness. Maryan came in with a great bouquet of flowers in his hand. "What, are we sick, little one!" began he. "Well, that is nothing wonderful! King Solomon said that for everyone there must be a time for sickness and a time for dancing.
She nodded; and as, forgetting politeness, he held the lantern close to her face, he saw two large tears brim up, tremble, and hang for a second before they fell. "You?" he murmured. She nodded again. "I am Vashti Vazzy Cara, they called me, Philip Cara's daughter. I daresay, though, you never heard my name? No, there is no reason why you should. And my sister, Ruth "
Then came an eventful day in Cara's life. This was when they reached the end of their long journey, and very thankful Cara was to get to it; for all the camels, in spite of their endurance, were weak and haggard for want of food and water.
"I only feel a little faint, not having taken any dinner." "Why did you go without a meal? It is not right to do so. I waited for you so long, and was so disappointed that you did not come." There was more of tenderness and wife-like interest in Cara's words and manner than had been manifested for a long time, and the feelings of Ellis were touched thereby.
Now Cara's red, small lips, in the twinkle of an eye, formed a crooked line in spite of her; then, bending toward her sister, she said, almost in a whisper: "Tell me, Ira, but tell the truth. Do you like that man Kranitski?" Irene laughed aloud, freely, almost as she had never laughed. "Ridiculous! Ah, what an amusing baby you are! Why should I not like him? He is our old and good acquaintance."
