Among the photographs of San Diego are several which represent groups of ecstatic bathers, ranging from small boys to elderly bald-headed gentlemen, apparently ready to take a plunge into the Pacific; while beneath them is displayed the legend, "January 1, 18 ." Candor compels me, however, to state that, as far as I was able to ascertain, these pictured bathers rarely pay a New Year's call to Neptune in his mighty palace, but content themselves in winter with going no further than his ante-chambers, the sheltered, sun-warmed areas of public bath-houses.
They were not rewarded by anything new except at the landing, where, behind the bath-houses, the bathing suits were hung out to dry, and presented a comical spectacle, the humor of which seemed to be lost upon all except themselves. It was such a caricature of humanity!
But it is not only in the numberless churches scattered throughout the city that the devotional spirit of the inhabitants is manifested. Moscow is the Mecca of Russia, where all are devotees. The external forms of religion are every where apparent in the palaces, the barracks, the institutions of learning, the traktirs, the bath-houses even in the drinking cellars and gambling-hells.
Another Japanese maid, an array of Turkish towels on her arm, crossed the lawn well to the right in the direction of the bath-houses, from which the children, in swimming suits, were beginning to emerge.
Italians, French, and Swiss resort here in great numbers to take the baths, which are supposed to be very efficacious for rheumatism and cutaneous affections. Doubtless many of them do up their bathing for the year while here; and they may need no more after scalding and soaking in this water for a couple of months. Before we reached the hotel, we turned aside into one of the bath-houses.
He got up and walked to the bow of the old boat, to see if any one were eavesdropping on the other side. Not a soul! The beach was deserted as far as the eye could see, away along to the bath-houses at the resort, where the Valencians came to play in summer.
I might well forget that modest sea, it is so built out of sight by the restaurants and bath-houses and switch-backs and shops that border it, and by the hotels and saloons and shows flaring along the road that divides the village, and the planked streets that intersect this.
He did love Nancy. That was all that counted. "Oh, felicitous Nancy! Your letter was " The water was a broken glass of blue, sunstruck waves there were few swimmers in it where the two friends went in next morning, for the beach proper with its bath-houses and float was nearly a quarter of a mile down.
I would think all day as to how I would make myself resolute, and I would say when old Feodor Stepanovitch would pinch my ear and deny me more soup, 'Ah ha, you wait, you old pig-face you wait until I've mastered my resolution and then I'll show you! I fancied, for instance, that if I could command myself sufficiently I could just go to people and say, 'You must have bath-houses like this and this' I had all the plans ready, you know, and in the hottest room you have couches like this, and you have a machine that beats your back so, so, so not those dirty old things that leave bits of green stuff all over you and so on, and so on.
One head only bobbed far out as a single swimmer shaped his course in unhurried strokes toward the bar. This swimmer had come alone from the hotel bath-houses and had strolled down into the streaming bubbles of an outgoing wave without halting to inspect the other bathers.
