For these writers, and doubtless for the vast majority of their readers, not merely of their own but of many subsequent generations, the world is peopled with a multitude of invisible apparitions, which, under title of gods, are held to dominate the affairs of man.
He could complain in the bitterness of his anguish, 'Thy fierce wrath goeth over me. Bound in affliction and iron, his 'soul was melted because of trouble. 'Now Satan assaults the soul with darkness, fears, frightful thoughts of apparitions; now they sweat, pant, and struggle for life.
Indeed, headless apparitions of all sorts are by no means uncommon.
The Illustrated London News of July 8, 1871, illustrates one of these apparitions, "The Fog-Bow, seen from the Matterhorn," observed by E. Whymper in this celebrated region of the Alps. The observation was taken just after the catastrophe of July 14, 1865; and by a curious coincidence, two immense white aerial crosses projected into the interior of the external arc.

The company at large did not distinguish themselves. Macduff, to the huge delight of the gallery, out-Macduff'd the average ranter.
"There are none," observes he, "that beg in this country, but there be witches too many bottle-bellied witches and others, that produce many strange apparitions, if you will believe report, of a shallop at sea manned with women and of a ship and great red horse standing by the mainmast; the ship being in a small cove to the eastward vanished of a sudden," etc.
I looked upon that whole army in the desert as destined to make their next general parade in the heavens and fancied you would see our poor, unhappy apparitions gliding through the sky; and, perhaps, exclaim, 'Poor Gilbert; he died in the good cause at last. It seems, however, that the necessity is spared of my making so pathetic an apostrophe. You had the good fortune to escape.
