The debate inspired an outburst of Anglophobia which was most distressing to the best friends of the United States and Great Britain. The American press, as a whole, honoured itself by championing the President, but certain newspapers made the debate an occasion for unrestrained abuse of Great Britain, and of any one who believed that the United States should treat that nation honestly.

Comparison, comparison, continually and far more venomous than the foolish, feeble sort of stuff which is only Anglophobia and water; and yet Hooper hasn't the courage to speak out either it's a morbid envy of England that is afraid to declare itself openly and can only deal in hints and innuendoes. What can Lady Adela see in a fellow like that?

We may go further, and say that the more recent outbreak of Anglophobia in Germany may probably be ascribed to the same official stimulus; and it too may be expected to cease when the politicians of Berlin see that it no longer pays to twist the British lion's tail. That sport ceased in and after 1886, because France was found still to be the enemy.

They were pronounced cases of anglophobia. The gendarme at last broke out into English, cutting his words off with a snarl: "What do you fellows want to get back for anyway? England is no good! England is a liar, and a thief." When he said this, I could see Edwards's face grow white and his eyes glitter.

The other side of the account shows that 65,146 snakes and 16,121 wild animals were killed, for which rewards aggregating $37,000 were paid. If one be a sufferer from anglophobia, a tour of the globe by conventional paths may produce rather more irritation than is good for man to such a traveler the British Empire is a chronic nightmare, for the red flag is everywhere.

They have christened it "Perfidious Albion." To speak the truth, however, the Anglophobia is not confined to the Abolitionists or Republicans when anything occurs to make any particular journal cross or querulous, you are almost sure to meet, that same week, a sanguinary leader, with the threadbare motto "delenda est Britannia."

Nor can we entirely exonerate the German Government, for we know the Germans to be a well-disciplined people; and we cannot believe that Anglophobia could have reached the point of mania without some official encouragement or, at least, in the face of any official discouragement. The agitation reached its climax in the uproar over the reference which Mr.

Most regretfully do I attribute Antoine de Mores' violent Anglophobia to the very rude things I and my brother were in the habit of saying to him when we quarrelled, which happened on an average about four times a day. The favourite game of these French boys was something like our "King of the Castle," only that the victor had to plant his flag on the summit of the "Castle."

The curiously tenacious hold that Anglophobia has on a certain class of our people might it not be worth your while to make, at some convenient time and in some natural way, a direct attack on it in a letter to someone, which could be published, or in some address, or possibly in a statement to a Senate committee, which could be given to the press?

Apparently the amount of Anglophobia was not portentous, when it came to putting this emotion to the test of counting heads. The bill went at once to the President, was signed and the dishonour was atoned for. Mr. and Mrs. The gathering represented all that was most distinguished in the official and diplomatic life of the British capital.
