At Wind Vane Hill the anemometer has registered 68 miles between 9 and 10 A.M. a record. The gusts at the hut frequently exceed 70 m.p.h. luckily the temperature is up to 5°, so that there is no hardship for the workers outside. Thursday, July 13.
To clear the anemometer vane it is necessary to go to the other end of the hut and climb a ladder. Twice whilst engaged in this task I had literally to lean against the wind with head bent and face averted and so stagger crab-like on my course. In those two days of really terrible weather our thoughts often turned to absentees at Cape Crozier with the devout hope that they may be safely housed.
Here in this camp as usual we do not feel it much, but we see the anemometer racing on the hill and the snow clouds sweeping past the ship. The floe is breaking between the point and the ship, though curiously it remains fast on a direct route to the ship. Now the open water runs parallel to our ship road and only a few hundred yards south of it.
Pressure plates are generally of moderate size, from a half or quarter of a sq. ft. up to two or three sq. ft., are round or square, and for these sizes, and shapes, and of course for a flat surface, the relation P=.003 v^2 is fairly correct. In the tube anemometer also it is really the pressure that is measured, although the scale is usually graduated as a velocity scale.
The wind continued to blow throughout the night, with squalls of even greater violence than before; a new record was created by a gust of 77 m.p.h. shown by the anemometer. The snow is so hard blown that only the fiercest gusts raise the drifting particles it is interesting to note the balance of nature whereby one evil is eliminated by the excess of another.
Well, he monkeyed away, and wouldn't say a word, so I said, 'You understand, Jode, this telegram comes from Hilbrun. And Jode, he quit his anemometer and said, 'I make no doubt, sir, that your despatch is genuwine. Oh, South Carolina's indignant at me!" And the Governor slapped his knee.
The anemometer spun slower and slower as the gale decreased in violence, and presently the airplane was gliding along with its normal smoothness. Here and there, between the patches of white cloud, they caught glimpses of the ultramarine sea, thousands of feet below them. It was so cold up here, even with the windows closed, that all the boys were shivering in their warmest wraps.
Tests instituted with the object of determining the pressure which the wind exerts on the cup of a "Robinson" anemometer have shown that when the breeze blows into the concave side of the cup, its effect is rather more than three times as strong as when it blows against the convex side.
Anemometers may be divided into two classes, those that measure the velocity, those that measure the pressure of the wind, but inasmuch as there is a close connexion between the pressure and the velocity, a suitable anemometer of either class will give information about both these quantities.
The barometer and the anemometer are not in it with a touch of gout, a sailor's superstitions or a farmer's instinct, and, until the Department of Agriculture realizes this, the weather forecast will have no practical value except as an interesting bit of fiction. "I once heard of a man who was 'salivated' in a quicksilver mine, and who, as a result, turned into a living barometer.
