Charles W. Chesnutt, in The Marrow of Tradition, has given a faithful portrayal of these disgraceful events, the Wellington of the story being Wilmington.

During the old aristocratic days of Wilmington she was satisfied with the reputation of her private tutors and of her young ladies' seminaries, where "sweet girl-graduates in their golden hair" cultivated cheeks like the surrounding peaches, while they learned Shakespeare, musical glasses and the use of the globes.

Sharp-toothed remorse had hold on Delia. If she had only gone to Wilmington earlier! "My fault! my fault!"

Nor, I fancy, has he. We have talked, of course, of love and Platonism till both love and Platonism became a weariness!" "Very far indeed am I from thinking you just. She is tired of poor Miss Wilmington.

The Hudson and the Winslow reported to the Wilmington, and orders came promptly to go in and open fire; but the Spaniards had not waited for a reply to their first shot.
