The words "gehwart" and "gichwart" being no doubt blunders of an illiterate artist. In Modern German the lines would be: Darin Frieden gewarte Therein peace await, or look for. Gewarte darin Frieden Await, or look for, therein peace. In allusion, perhaps, to the eucharist of alms, to hold one or the other of which the dish seems to have been intended. þ. The original form of the incident is found in the Hitopadesa, where three sharpers persuade a Bráhman that the goat he is carrying for a sacrifice is a dog. This story of the Florentine noodle or rather Poggio's version may have been suggested by a tale in the Gesta Romanorum, in which the emperor's physician is made to believe that he had leprosy.

The substance of the Gesta Romanorum and the style of the Novellino appear so, considered in relation to the Decameron; the mystery plays are an obvious instance, not to be explained by any general immaturity of medieval ideas.
The reverse of another coin bears the same Sun-God legend, and represents the Sun-God as holding a small round object. Upon another coin we see Constantine holding a small round object surmounted by a Victory. And upon one coin of this Emperor we see the letter P surmounting a cross; surrounded by the legend Gloria Romanorum.

The influence of the Gesta Romanorum is most conspicuously to be traced in the work of Gower, Chaucer, and Lydgate; but it has served as a source of inspiration to the flagging ingenuity of each succeeding generation. It would be tedious to enter on an enumeration of the various indebtednesses of English literature to these early tales. A few instances will serve as illustration.
