In 1887 the Department was divided and Calvin Thomas, '74, became Professor of Germanic Languages and Literature, to be succeeded, after his call to Columbia University in 1896, by George A. Hench, Lafayette, '85, who lost his life three years later in an accident in the White Mountains. Max Winkler, Harvard, '89, the present occupant of the chair, eventually succeeded him.
Once he was out of sight, the Winkler household resolved itself into an additional search party; and it was noticeable that, whereas formerly, when they were leaving the home, they would carefully secure the cabin against intruders, they now disdained any further preparation than kicking the kitten out of doors, and removing the kettle of boiling stew from the fireplace to the ground before the door.
And before you leave to look at the body, I would like to know whether the dead man owned a watch, or rather whether he had it with him on the day of the murder." "Yes, sir; he did have a watch, a gold watch," answered Mrs. Klingmayer. Riedau looked at the bookkeeper, who nodded and said: "Yes, sir; Winkler had a watch, a gold watch with a double case. It was a large watch, very thick.
"Bunny, could you run down the street, and ask Mr. Winkler to come and take his monkey away?" "Yes'm, I'll do it," the little boy answered politely. But just then something else happened. Wango, trying to peel the wax paper from another lollypop, dropped a second one.
For they could see Wango give it a yank now and then, and, when he did, poor Miss Winkler would cry out in pain. "Oh, go for my brother! He's down on the fish dock I think," Miss Winkler begged. "No, we can't go there," replied Bunny slowly. "Our mother told us not to go there unless Bunker Blue or Aunt Lu was with us." "Then the monkey will never let go of my hair," sighed Miss Winkler.
I saw that Winkler turned pale as he took the note in his hand. It seemed to be only a few words written hastily on a card, thrust into an envelope. Winkler's teeth were set as he opened the letter. The messenger had already gone away." "Did you notice his number?" asked Dr. von Riedau. "No, I scarcely noticed the man at all. I was looking at Winkler, whose behaviour was so peculiar.
He liked to make mischief, or what others called mischief, though to him perhaps it was only fun. And he did not seem to like ladies. He would let boys and girls and men pet him, and make a fuss over him, but he would very seldom allow ladies to do this. Miss Winkler, the sister of the sailor who had brought Wango from a far- off land, was one of the ladies the monkey did not like.
Muller led his companions back to the commissioner's office and they made their report to Dr. von Riedau. Upon being questioned further, Pokorny stated: "I had very little to do with Winkler. We met only when he had a report to make to me or to show me his books, and we never met outside the office.
"Only we didn't find Mr. Friday," put in Sue. "But we found a cave a make-believe one," Bunny said quickly. "And I fell in, but we didn't get any fish," added the sister. "And the dog did pull her out, and we're going to keep him," went on Bunny. "And will you take us home, Mr. Winkler?
The youngest of them, Fritz Bormann, said some kind words and was about to wax more enthusiastic, when Degenhart, the eldest clerk, cut in with the words: "Oh, don't trouble yourself. Nobody ever liked Winkler here. 'He was not a good man he was not even a good worker. This is the first time that he has a reasonable excuse for neglecting his duties."
