No singer can rise to any distinction without the severest kind of self-discipline and hard work. This is the testimony of all the great vocalists of our time of any time. This is the message they send back from the mountain top of victory to the younger ones who are striving to acquire the mastery they have achieved. Work, work and again work!

Why, then, taboo the opera and jeopardize its existence, leaving the field to the frivolous operettas and farces? The other obstacle alluded to the love of colorature song is a thing that will cure itself with the advance of musical culture. The Germans and the French have long since turned their backs on the florid variety of vocalists, and the Italians are now following suit.

One of these was R. Pohl, who in all earnestness sent Schumann a serious text in which the moon was introduced as one of the vocalists! Schumann mildly remonstrated that "to conceive of the moon as a person, especially as singing, would be too risky."

The great Sorceress The forest seen from above A struggle for life The crimes of plants Everlasting twilight Births and deaths Concerts by forest vocalists The "durian" The "ple-lok" Vastnesses unexplored by science Treasures intact Para Rubber The Samaritans of the jungle The forest and its history.

I will not broach the question here, whether or not their language is the reason of it, and whether Mme. Sontag, Pischek, Tichatschek, Mlle. Lind, who is almost a German, and many others, do not form magnificent exceptions; but, upon the whole, German vocalists sing, and do not howl; the screaming school is not theirs; they make music."

But it is not only a delight to me to listen to the lark singing at heaven's gate and to the vesper nightingale in the oak copse the singer of a golden throat and wondrous artistry; I also love the smaller vocalists the modest shufewing and the lesser whitethroat and the yellowhammer with his simple chant.

The Church has only rendered one service to music, and that without wishing it: they have been obliged to have instrumentalists and vocalists for the services, and that made them support the chapels and choir-schools that have served for musical education in default of schools.

Orders were pouring in; there was a run on some of the back stock, and the figure had gone up. Even the manager appeared elated. As he sat and opened his letters a chorus of airy vocalists sang in his brain, to most exquisite music, 'This whole concern may be profitable yet, profitable yet, profitable yet.

Forty years ago Robert Schumann complained that the musical critics had so much to say about singers and players, while the composer was almost entirely ignored. To-day this reproach could hardly be made, for although vocalists still receive perhaps a disproportionate share of attention, compositions, new and old, are also discussed at great length in the press.

We were really quite well supplied with musical instruments, for there were now in the Mission two guitars, one mandolin, a violin and a few harmonicas, besides the two organs, while as for vocalists everybody sang from Mr. H. down to the Eskimo boys, girls and the baby.
