A fifth, composed of country and Neck negroes, was to assemble at Bulkley's Farm, two miles and a half from the city, seize the upper powder-magazine, and then march down; and a sixth was to assemble at Denmark Vesey's, and obey his orders.
Vesey's card, scrawled over in pencil and referring to the morrow's luncheon, was brought up to Mrs. Tramore. "They mean it all as a bribe," said the principal recipient of these civilities. "As a bribe?" Rose repeated. "She wants to marry you to that boy; they've seen Captain Jay and they're frightened." "Well, dear mamma, I can't take Mr. Mangler for a husband." "Of course not.
It was at Mrs. Vesey's evening parties, given on the Tuesdays on which the Club dined at the "Turk's Head," that he often had long chats with Hannah More. She had to forget what she called his political malefactions, before she could allow herself to admire his high spirits and good humour.
"At last," said Everly, with fervor, and almost unconsciously his face full of an agitation he could not conceal. Vaura's practised eye told her what was coming, and fain to escape it, said gayly: "Yes, at last, Sir Tilton to relieve my curiosity by explaining M. de Vesey's words." Here a lively air from a French clock attracted her attention. "Listen, Sir Tilton, two o'clock."
Such preaching must have certainly added fresh fuel to the deep sense of injury, then burning in the breasts of many of the slaves, and must have operated also to prepare them for the next step which Vesey's plan of campaign contemplated, viz.: a resort to force to wrest from the whites the freedom which was theirs, not only by the will of Heaven, but as well by the supreme law of the land.
For it is of the essence of this simple history that, in the first place, that success dated from Mrs. Vesey's Venetian dejeuner, and in the second reposed, by a subtle social logic, on the very anomaly that had made it dubious.
More than one witness placed the conjectural strength of Vesey's forces as high as 9,000, but I am inclined to write this down as a gross overestimate of the people actually enrolled as members of the conspiracy. Here is an example of the nice calculation and discretion of the man who was the soul of the conspiracy.
My friend, David Lee Child, has kindly communicated to me a few memoranda of a conversation held long since with a free colored man who had worked in Vesey's shop during the time of the insurrection; and these generally confirm the official narratives.
Vesey's, you would have been much gratified, as it exhibited an instance of the high importance in which Dr. Johnson's character is held, I think even beyond any I ever before was witness to. The company consisted chiefly of ladies, among whom were the Duchess Dowager of Portland, the Duchess of Beaufort, whom I suppose from her rank I must name before her mother Mrs.
Accordingly we find him launching away in a career of social dissipation; dining and supping out; at clubs, at routs, at theaters; he is a guest with Johnson at the Thrales, and an object of Mrs. Thrale's lively sallies; he is a lion at Mrs. Vesey's and Mrs. Montagu's, where some of the high-bred blue-stockings pronounce him a "wild genius," and others, peradventure, a "wild Irishman."
