Albans made a marvelous clock which not only showed the course of the sun and moon but the ebb and flow of the tide. In the meantime more big clocks began to be put up on the church towers. But remember, none of these could boast any nice degree of accuracy; it was many, many years later before the secrets of correct time-keeping were mastered.
Let me illustrate my case by analogy. The working of a clock is a model of uniform action; good time-keeping means uniformity of action.
Our present system of time-keeping has been evolved out of the past and, like many other such heirlooms, is the result of a vast amount of study. Centuries ago nobody knew how to reckon time or what to reckon it by.
The floors bent beneath the feet of the time-keeping dancers. But twice in the evening some of the inmates started, and the pallor occasionally common to the household overspread their faces, for they felt underneath them a counter-motion to the dance, as if the floor rose slightly to answer their feet.
"Know anybody would take in the old man's few traps and take care of them till something develops?" continued the landlord. "He is dead, of course. Must have been him was run over that time; but they might sell for a trifle for the child's benefit. I wouldn't mind having that time-keeping arrangement of bells myself. Was really quite ingenious.
Chalk, with an effort, "so I did, but half-way to yours I got a nail in my shoe and had to come home." "Home!" exclaimed his wife. "Why, you were gone two hours and thirty-five minutes." "It was very painful," said Mr. Chalk, as the captain stared in open-eyed astonishment at this exact time-keeping. "One time I thought that I should hardly have got back."

It gives, in pictures, with only a line or two of description, the progress of different industries such as the locomotive, from the clumsy engine of 1802 to the elaborate machinery of the present day; the evolution of lighting, from the pine-knot and tallow-dip to the electric light; methods of signalling, from the Indian fire-signal to the telegraph; time-keeping, etc.
For a long case, you see, has an exceedingly confined arc of oscillation because the swing of the pendulum is so limited. It is this length of pendulum together with its almost harmonic motion which results in the excellent time-keeping done by clocks of the "grandfather" class.
The time-keeping steps of the soldiery upon the marble floor mingled with drum, fife, and organ. Through all this, one caught now and then the monotonous voice of a shaven-headed priest, reciting his prescribed part at the altar, kneeling and reading at intervals.
