It is after this hour that the tertulia, that peculiarly Spanish function, begins, but how long it lasts or just what it is I do not know. I am able to report confidently, however, that it is a species of salon and that it is said to be called a tertulia because of the former habit in the guests, and no doubt the hostess, of quoting the poet Tertullian.

No, he wasn't in love with La Clavel in the accepted sense of that indefinite term; he was the slave of the illusion, the emotions, she spun; he adored her as the goddess of his youth and aspirations. He tried to explain this, in halting and inadequate Spanish, to his tertulia; and because of his spirit rather than his words, his friends understood him.

The doctor dropped into a chair. "Giving a tertulia?" he said, with a detached air. "A simple greeting for all the kind friends who care to come." "And only to-morrow?" "Yes. Charles would be tired out after a day at the mine, and so I It would be good to have him to myself for one evening on our return to this house I love. It has seen all my life." "Ah, yes!" snarled the doctor, suddenly.

The great disadvantage of Puerto de Casilda is the want of fresh water, which vessels have to procure at the distance of a league. We passed a very agreeable evening in the house of one of the richest inhabitants, Don Antonio Padron, where we found assembled at a tertulia all the good company of Trinidad. We were again struck with the gaiety and vivacity that distinguish the women of Cuba.

They waltz as few other men do, a very poetry of motion, an abandonment of enjoyment, as if their soul were in it, especially if the music be somewhat languid. This is especially the case with the artillery officers, who are great favourites in society, and belong exclusively to the upper ranks. I have described this tertulia at length because it was a typical one of many.

The priests' tertulia at Fort's shop was a well-spring of riches and prosperity for the business. The little nuns of such-and-such a convent advised the ladies they knew to buy chocolate and sweets at Fort's; the friars of another convent gave them an order for sugar or cinnamon, and cash poured into the drawer. The Tender-hearted had three children: Juan, Jeronimo, and Isabel.

This want of free intercourse is to be regretted, as it prevents that kind of friendship by which many of their jealousies and prejudices might be removed. The society at this tertulia was easy, and so far as the enjoyment of dancing went, pleasant; but there was no conversation. The refreshments consisted of a few dulces, lemonade, and strong drinks in an anteroom.

The Salon del Prado is the general meeting-place of all who feel more inclined for al fresco entertainment than for close rooms, and the different groups of friends meeting there draw their chairs together in small circles, and thus hold their tertulia.

After all, this is but the Spanish tertulia at a different hour, but if it should ever supersede the real evening tertulia it will be a thousand pities; it would be far more sensible if we were to adopt the Spanish custom, rather than that they should follow ours.

After she began to run the establishment there was always a great influx of priests and monks recommended by her brother. Some of them used to gather in the back-shop toward dusk for a tertulia, and it was said that one of the members of the tertulia, a youthful little priest from Murcia, had an understanding with the landlady.
