If the formation is observed when it is close to the morning terminator, say, when the latter lies from l deg. to 2 deg. E. of the centre of the floor, it is one of the most striking and beautiful objects which the lunar observer can scrutinize. The floor at this phase is sufficiently illuminated to disclose some of its most noteworthy features.

Indeed, I take it the better part of Etchiu has thus been cast up by the sea, and now lies between its semicircle of peaks and its crescent of beach, like a young moon in the western sky, a new bay of ricefield in the old bay's arms. We had come by way of its ocean terminator along its fringe of sand; we were now to cross its face.

Tycho and Copernicus, with their long silvery rays; brilliant Aristarchus; dark, deep Plato; the straight valley, the so-called seas, the smooth, round, smaller craters, isolated Pico, the ridges, and the wildly-rugged battlements upon the terminator all were scanned in turn, with Tom's thirst increasing every time he looked.

The inner slope of the W. wall is slightly terraced. The border on the S. is much lower than elsewhere, as is evident when the formation is on the evening terminator. On the N. is the deep crater Messala a. NEWCOMB. The most prominent of a group of formations standing in the midst of the Haemus Mountains. Its crest is nearly 12,000 feet above the floor, on which there are some hills.

"Well, what do you make of it?" The voice recalled me to myself, and I began to scrutinise the dim and shadowy border of the terminator for the feeblest ray of light, but all in vain. "I can't see any 'luminous projection'; but what a magnificent object in the telescope!"

Thus he continued to do for the space of a whole year; and after every short period, his family of the sea visited him; so his life was pleasant, and his eye was cheerful: and he ceased not to live in this state until he was visited by the terminator of delights and the separator of companions. This is the end of their story. The mercy of God be on them all!

He and O. Lohse, at Bothkamp, November 3 to 11, 1871, saw the dark hemisphere partially illuminated by secondary light, extending 30° from the terminator, and thought the effect might be produced by a very extensive twilight.

By-and-by, as we get nearer, we shall study the markings of the terminator, and a shallow notch that is just visible on the inner edge of the southern horn. Can you see it?" "Yes, I think I can. What is it?" replied Miss Carmichael. "Probably a vast crater, or else a range of high mountains intercepting the sunlight, and making a scallop in the border of the terminator.

OERSTED. An oblong formation with very low walls, scarcely traceable on the S.E., except when near the terminator. There is a conspicuous crater on the N.W. side of the floor, and a curious square enclosure, with a crater on its W. border, abutting on the N.E. wall. CHEVALLIER. An inconspicuous object enclosed by slightly curved ridges. It includes a deep bright crater.

The best phase for observing Hommel and its surroundings is when the W. wall is just within the evening terminator. PITISCUS. The most regular of the Vlacq group. It is 52 miles in diameter, and is surrounded by an apparently continuous rampart, except on the E., where there is a crater, and on the S.W., where it abuts on Hommel h.
