Not even a Voltaire, a Rousseau, or a Mirabeau, had they lived in England, could have been accepted by English society, much less a man who scorned and ridiculed it. Even Byron for a few years the pet, the idol, and the glory of the country was not too high to fall. To quote one of his own stanzas,

In the Deutsches Museum for July, 1776, Sturz printed a poem entitledDie Mode,” in which he treats of the slavery of fashion and in several stanzas deprecates the influence of Yorick. “Und so schwingt sich, zum Genie erklärt, Strephon kühn auf Yorick’s Steckenpferd.

In "The Forsaken Merman" for instance, there are many stanzas that make you smell the salt-foam and imagine all that lies, hidden and strange, down there upon the glittering sand. That line, "Where great whales go sailing by Round the world for ever and aye," has a liberating power that may often recur, when one is, God knows, far enough from the spouting of any whale!

Take Cleopatra now, the lady to whom Marc Antony said: "I am dying, Egypt, dying," and then refrained from doing so for about nineteen more stanzas. Cleo or Pat she was known by both names, I hear did fairly well as a queen, as a coquette and as a promoter of excursions on the river until she fleshened up. Then she flivvered.

Certain stanzas in which, as they think, he gave utterance to this passion are by them ascribed to one of these years; so that if their view were correct, the poem in question would have to be regarded as the earliest of his extant productions. The problem which we have indicated must detain us for a moment.

Doña Pepa had died, and Labarta, working off the tearful heaviness of his low spirits, bade her farewell in a long canticle. Ulysses ran his eyes over the enclosed newspaper clipping containing the last verses of the poet. The stanzas were in Castilian. A bad sign!... After that there could be no doubt that his end must be very near.

He must correct the press himself, and print it without any interval between the stanzas, because the sense is in some places continued beyond them; and the title must be, "Elegy, written in a Country Churchyard." If he would add a line or two to say it came into his hands by accident, I should like it better. Cambridge, August 18, 1758.

Warder: "He says ye hit Pat Curry with yer spade on the side of his head." Prisoner: "Bedad an' I did." Warder: "Then plade not guilty." This dialogue, loud and in the full hearing of the court. Read Wordsworth's two poems on Burns; kind, merciful, steady, glowing, manly they are, with some strong phrases, good lines, and human feeling all through, winding up in two stanzas at the close.

Minute after minute, rhapsody on rhapsody, she wooed the near, untouchable delights that, like the moonbeams, seem but empty nothing when the drudges seize them for their palaces of mud. Nor did she woo in vain. There were stanzas in her dance of simple gratitude, as if the spirit of the mystery had found her mood acceptable and dowered her with new ability to see, and know, and understand.

It will, perhaps, here be asked whether the Basques do not possess popular poetry, like most other nations, however small and inconsiderable. They have certainly no lack of songs, ballads, and stanzas, but of a character by no means entitled to the appellation of poetry.
