There have been reassuring signs of a business revival from the deep slump which all the world has been experiencing. Our unemployment, which gave its deep concern only a few weeks ago, has grown encouragingly less, and new assurances and renewed confidence will attend the congressional declaration that American industry will be held secure.
They spread their balloon silk tent in the cockpit, holding fast to the corners until enough water had fallen into it to fill the coffee-pot, and they had three such cups of coffee as you never fancied in your fondest dreams. For dessert they had "Silver Fox Slump," an invention of Roy's made with chocolate, honey and, I think, horse-radish. It has to be stirred thoroughly.
But she was Scotch, and a Douglas. There was no weak fiber that would let her slump before this emergency. She went back to the little platform, stood beside the desk that held the globe and the dictionary and a can of flowers, and rapped loudly with the ruler from the Pocatello hardware store. By degrees the room ceased buzzing with excited talk, the shuffling feet stood still.
The slump in the market value of securities within the first week of the war flurry was estimated at $2,000,000,000, and radical measures were necessary to prevent hasty action while the condition of panic prevailed. This sudden stoppage of ordinary financial operations was accompanied by a similar cessation of the industries of peace over a wide range of territory.
Cattle companies were organized on the very summit of that craze. Then came the slump. Last year cattle had fallen in price nearly forty per cent. This year there is a further falling. I'm giving you Texas conditions. Half the herds at Dodge to-day are being handled by the receivers of cattle companies or by trustees for banks. That accounts for the big drive.
And fortunately the light from that one shaded bulb was almost lost in the great dining-room. Subconsciously Mrs. De Peyster recalled Matilda's injunction to "be humble," and she let her manner slump though at that moment she had no particular excess of dignity to discard. Jack sighted the food Matilda had left upon the table. With a swoop he was upon it. "Oh, joy! Squabs! Asparagus!"
"Miles! and miles! Rough walking, too, darned rough! And your poor little feet " "I don't walk particularly with my 'poor little feet," gibed Eve Edgarton. "Most especially, thank you, Mr. Barton, I walk with my big wanting-to-walk!" "Oh," said Barton. "O h." The bones in his knees began suddenly to slump like so many knots of tissue-paper. "Oh all right Eve!" he called out a bit hazily.
"I wonder," continued the girl, "if you knew at the time, the time when my eyes seemed to open when I was deceived by his pretension into thinking you remember that first sermon, Aunt Bell how independent and noble I thought it was going to be. Oh, Aunt Bell what a slump in my faith that day! I think its foundations all went, and then naturally the rest of it just seemed to topple.
There are other reasons that might lead one to presume that these recent works represent a slump. For Ornstein has been devoting too much of his energy to concertizing. He has been traveling madly over the United States and Canada for the last few years, living in Pullman sleepers and playing to audiences of all sorts.
What would you do, dear reader what should I do if a slump went on continually? And that brings me to the second great danger to our modern civilisation, and that is War. We have over-developed war.
