He was only doing as all the other spring toys do moving when the wheels within him moved. "Wow!" cried Ski's father again. "This is magic! This bear is bewitched! It will bring us bad luck! It must not stay in my igloo!" "Oh, please let me keep it!" begged Ski, as his father caught up the Plush Bear. "No! No! It would be dangerous! It would bring us bad luck!
Directly school is over away they go, with their skates, snowshoes, or toboggans, to have a right good time in their different playgrounds. The hill on which the palace stands is given up to these little revellers, and in the evenings dozens of them of all ages may be seen descending the slopes face downwards on their kjælker, or racing through the trees with their long ski on their feet.
This differs according to the edition. Cliff and rock are shown grey, while glacier contour lines are blue. Some districts, such as the Bernese Oberland, have produced this map with red lines showing all the Ski runs. In other places they also provide Ski-ing maps, but on a different scale and not as good as the Ordnance Map.
Johnson, the deputy sheriff, had said in the morning that he was going to take a run over to the Bar L-M, to look things over. It was by no means the first time he had said this, and the girl felt that he had no particular reason to suspect her to-day. It was still snowing, not too heavily for one to venture out, but steadily enough to obliterate ski tracks entirely in less than an hour.
It was a very different story, trudging back through the snow-drifts in the twilight, from flitting like a butterfly on the ski. He realized now that his legs were tired from the long run he had enjoyed so much.
How are they to learn what is best in music unless we are willing to give it to them? "The trouble with America is that it does not at all realize how much it knows how much talent is here. We are so easily tricked with a foreign name and title; our serious and talented musicians are constantly being pushed to the wall by some unknown with a name ending in ski.
Even our feet made no noise at all, clad in their soft fur boots, for we could no longer pull on ski owing to the increasing weight of ice collecting in our sleeping-bags and on the sledging equipment.
All gave us a pull up the ski slope; it had become a point of honour to take this slope without a 'breather. I find such an effort trying in the early morning, but had to go through with it.
The following lists show firstly what I think every runner going several miles beyond home ought to carry; and secondly what a great many runners carry in addition: A strong knife with corkscrew, leather punch, tin opener, etc. A Ski tip, gimlet and mending outfit. Wire. String and cord. Spare binding and toe strap. Siren or strong whistle.
The ponies are slowly tiring, but we lighten loads again to-morrow by making another depôt. Meares has just come up to report that Jehu made four feeds for the dogs. He cut up very well and had quite a lot of fat on him. Meares says another pony will carry him to the Glacier. This is very good hearing. The men are pulling with ski sticks and say that they are a great assistance.
