But even these great souls report that they do not possess the answer to the Final Question the "Why" of the Infinite Manifestation. And so we may be excused from attempting to answer it and without shame or sense of shortcoming do we still say, to this question, "We do not know!" In order that the Final Question may be fully understood let us consider it for a moment.

Though this shortcoming discloses itself in many and various ways, it is to be observed chiefly in the matter of literary style. Women enjoy a reputation for slipshod style. They have earned it.

A just and acceptable enlargement of the list of offenses for which extradition may be claimed and granted is most desirable between this country and Great Britain. The territory of neither should become a secure harbor for the evil doers of the other through any avoidable shortcoming in this regard.

The period of minority appears therefore to have been as unreasonably short as the duration of the disabilities of women was preposterously long. But, in point of fact, there was no element either of excess or of shortcoming in the circumstances which gave their original form to the two kinds of guardianship.

How can we expect the heathen to become Christians, when those who call themselves so show so little regard to the religion of Christ? I see the same sad shortcoming on shore. Christians do not strive to bring honour to the name of Christ. For three weeks and more we traverse the Pacific, keeping bright look-out by night and day for rocks and reefs. "Land on the starboard bow," is the cry.

Indeed, the sculpture of M. Dubois seems positively to have but one defect, a defect which from one point of view is certainly a quality, the defect of impeccability. It is at any rate impeccable; to seek in it a blemish, or, within its own limitations, a distinct shortcoming, is to lose one's pains.

The power appointed for this purpose is, as on all other occasions, where the operation is important, and where there is any danger of a shortcoming, wisely provided in abundance; and there are contrived means for disposing of the redundancy. These, in the present case, are our volcanos.

In other words, only three persons out of every thousand afflicted with defective utterance were found to have any physical shortcoming that was responsible for the affliction. Take any of these two thousand cases say those that stammered, for instance. What was the cause of their difficulty, if it did not lie in the organs used in the production of speech?

God at this time is growing greater and more awful, and man, less certain of himself, is beginning to feel a new sense of mystery and of shortcoming. Whether it was due to the anxiety and depression felt in Greece during the century before the Persian wars, or to foreign influences, or mainly to the natural growth of the Greek mind itself, religious phenomena of a new kind now appear.

'I wonder it did not occur to you that Ruby would go there. John Crumb scratched his head, as though acknowledging the shortcoming of his own intellect. 'Of course if she was to go to London it was the proper thing for her to do. 'I knew she'd do the thing as was right. I said that all along. Darned if I didn't. You ask Mixet, squoire, him as is baker down Bardsey Lane.
