Bales of furs, which had been brought down in fleets of canoes from the wild, almost unknown regions of the Northwest, lay piled up to the beams skins of the smooth beaver, the delicate otter, black and silver fox, so rich to the eye and silky to the touch that the proudest beauties longed for their possession; sealskins to trim the gowns of portly burgomasters, and ermine to adorn the robes of nobles and kings.
In the room were several large, golden cabinets, the doors of which were closed and locked, and in addition to the cabinets there were tables, chairs and sofas, the latter upholstered with softest sealskins. Handsome rugs of exquisitely woven seaweeds were scattered about, the colors of which were artistically blended together. In one corner a fountain of air bubbled up through the water.
Sealskins should be wrapped up in newspaper and stored in a cool place when put away. Moth will ruin them if left open and heat crumples them, making them useless. She was certainly using them quite happily afterwards. This book does not profess to be in any way a textbook of the technique of Ski-ing.
"Stop screaming stop that shouting at once keep still, every one of you!" she said angrily, shaking various shoulders as she went with such good effect that the voice of the woman in sealskins could be heard by the time Margaret reached her. "I don't think she's badly hurt!" said this woman, nervously and eagerly. She was evidently badly shaken, and was very white.
Having come to anchor close in with the large island, in eighteen fathoms, we took all we wanted on board very conveniently. Captain Guy also purchased of Glass five hundred sealskins and some ivory. We remained here a week, during which the prevailing winds were from the northward and westward, and the weather somewhat hazy.
When the European garments were worn out which they were, long before deliverance was sent to them Nell Massey proved her fitness for a Robinson Crusoe life, by actually splitting the sealskins which were as thick as sole leather so as to obtain material thin enough for clothing. Of course, a flagstaff had been among the first things erected.
The tribes along the seashore, however, were good hunters and fishermen, and those Indians along the Santa Barbara Channel and the islands near by were a tall, fine-looking people, and the most intelligent of the race. They had large houses and canoes, and clothed themselves in sealskins. The Indians Drake saw near Point Reyes had fur coats, or cloaks, but no other clothes.
Although the gold mines of Meta Incognita had become discredited, it was not long before hope began to revive in the hearts of the English merchants. The new country produced at least valuable sealskins. There was always the chance, too, that a lucky discovery of a Western Passage might bring fabulous wealth to the merchant adventurers.
After a minute or two they all separated, and then one of them said to me "Now, my lad, we're all ready. Go up to the cabin and bring down your bundle and her basket, and tell the lady we are waiting for her." "There's the shovel," said I, "and the boat's sail must I bring them down?" "Oh yes, bring them down, and also two or three sealskins for the lady to sit upon."
"The humane society ought to get after the women who wear baby lamb trimming." "The way sealskins are procured is also very cruel," said another girl.
