Her husband bore the name of Cleophas, and her daughter that of Mary of Cleophas. This daughter was, however, older than her aunt, the Blessed Virgin, and had been married first to Alpheus, by whom she had three sons, afterwards the Apostles Simon, James the Less and Thaddeus. She had one son by her second husband, Sabat, and another called Simon, by her third husband, Jonas.
"If his Highness judges of the English by you he will be deceived," I said. "If you were ever to show your face in any place where Sabat Jung was he would have you hanged, as you very well know." I kept my eyes fixed on the young Nabob's face as I spoke, and was pleased to see that I had made an impression.
No sooner did the Nabob hear this than he changed colour. "Are you a friend of Sabat Jung's? Is he coming to Bengal?" he asked, with scarcely concealed anxiety. "Sabat Jung is my protector," I replied, putting on a bolder air. "If he hears that any wrong has been done to the English in Calcutta, he will surely come here and avenge them."
He asked me many questions about the taking of Gheriah, and also about Mr Robert Clive, whose character stood high in the estimation of every one in Bengal, even the Moors having bestowed on him the name of Sabat Jung, signifying the daring in war. "We had heard of this affair before you came," Mr. Holwell told me.
"This youth is to be kept in the Nabob's hands because he is a friend of Sabat Jung's," he answered. It may be imagined how mortified I was to find my boasting of the friendship of Colonel Clive thus turned against me. There was no help for it, however.
"I am going," said Sabat to Colonel MacInnes, "to see if I can carry the message of Christianity to this fierce people." So Sabat and the Prince, with others, went aboard a sailing ship and crossed the Strait of Malacca to Sumatra. They landed, and for long the struggle with the rebels swayed from side to side. The Prince was so pleased with Sabat that he made him his Prime Minister.
He was the only one of those who were listening to Sabat who could understand what he was saying. When Sabat had finished his story, Martyn turned, and, in his clear, musical voice translated it from the Persian into Latin mixed with Italian for Padre Julius Cæsar, into Hindustani for the Indian scholar, into Bengali for the Bengal gentleman, and into English for the British officer and his wife.
Martyn, when unable to bear it any longer, would order his palanquin and be carried over to the Sherwoods to escape from the intolerable brawling shout. What Sabat could be was plain from the story of his wife Amina; his seventh, as he told his friends.
To have worshipped in Mecca before the sacred Kaaba and to have kissed the black stone in its wall this was to make Paradise certain for them both. Having done that pilgrimage these two Arabs, Sabat and Abdallah, would be able to take the proud title of "Haji" which would proclaim to every man that they had been to Mecca the Holy of Holies.
He spoilt his brother's aim, but he was too late to save himself. He was wounded, but not killed. The brother threw off his disguise, and Sabat remembering the forgiveness of Abdallah forgave his brother, gave him many presents, and sent loving messages to his mother.
