Even the value of the victim is less important than the correct performance of the ceremony. The teaching of the Brâhmaṇas is not so much that a good heart is better than lavish alms as that the ritually correct sacrifice of a cake is better than a hecatomb not offered according to rule. The offerings required by the Vedic ritual are very varied.
Thus the Bleheris version which gives us a Dead Knight, presumably, from his having been slain in battle, still in vigorous manhood, and a hale King is, ritually, the more correct.
Apparently, however, all these usages of purification by fasting go back to the idea that the body, which is identified with the human personality, is in its ordinary state nonsacred and therefore unfit for the performance of a sacred act, and that it is rendered especially unfit by contact with a ritually unclean thing.
"Father me not! He hath beguiled us here under false pretences. He hath made us violate the solemn decree of the synagogue. He is outlawed he and his house and his food. Sinner! The viands thou hast given us, what of them? Is thy meat ritually prepared?" "Thou, a man of culture, carest for these childish things?" "Childish things? Wherefore, then, have I left my Portugal?"

The little priest rose with a distinctly dubious grimace. "Now, why on earth," he muttered, "why on earth couldn't he have come before?" Some seven minutes later the island was occupied by an invasion of townsfolk and police, and the latter had put their hands on the victorious duellist, ritually reminding him that anything he said might be used against him.
The ritual side of atonement was seriously weakened by the loss of the Temple. The sacrificial atonement was gone. Nothing replaced it ritually. Hence the Jewish tendency towards a practical religion was strengthened by its almost enforced stress in atonement on moral betterment. But this moral betterment depended on a renewed communion with God. Sin estranged, atonement brought near.
This, when pure, and ritually prepared, was supposed to wash away all sins, and to qualify the priest to approach the altar of the gods with more acceptable prayers: washing with water being a type natural enough of inward cleansing and purity of mind. They also worshipped fountains and lakes and rivers.
It was the invariable custom of the ambitious and confident courtier to appropriate the Queen to himself. Pausing at the close, he raised his arm ritually towards the trees and rested thus a moment speechless. "Descampativos!" he suddenly exclaimed in a stentorian tone, throwing off his robe.
Simon of Trent and many more were said to have been martyred in this way. But recently the trial of Mendil Beiliss, a Jew, upon a charge of ritually murdering the Russian lad Yushinsky has caused a world-wide sensation. p. 99 Gutling. Guzzling. Vide Vol. p. 100 took in Lamb's-Wool Ale. Lamb's-Wool Ale is hot ale mixed with the pulp of roasted apples, sugared and well spiced.
