At some points on the line the troops, apparently of their own volition, constructed such defenses as they could without the silent spade and the noisy ax. One of these points was held by Captain Ransome's battery of six guns.
So perfect, in this spring of nineteen-two, was the harmony of Ransome's being that the pulse of the unborn thing was one with all his other pulses; it was one, indistinguishably, with the splendor of life, the madness of running, and the joy he took in his own remarkable performances on the horizontal bar.
I would say to the helmsman: "Call me at need," and drop into that chair and close my eyes, feeling that there was no more sleep for me on earth. And then I would know nothing till, some time between seven and eight, I would feel a touch on my shoulder and look up at Ransome's face, with its faint, wistful smile and friendly, gray eyes, as though he were tenderly amused at my slumbers.
They took up the cradle and contents to carry it home, when all of a sudden Ransome's eye detected a finger protruding through a hole in the box. "Hallo!" said he. "Why, there's a body inside that box." "Good heavens!" said Little, "he may be alive." With that he made a rush and went in over head and ears. "Confound it" said he as soon as he got his breath.
She made no positive resistance; but, while her body yielded and retired, her eye remained riveted on Jael Dence, and her hand clutched the air like a hawk's talons, unwilling to lose her prey, and then she turned so weak, Ransome had to support her to her carriage. As Grace's head sunk on Ransome's shoulder, Jael Dence's eyes closed for the first time.
You don't offer to help me, I observe; and since you are so conscientious as all that, I should think you might lend me a hand in my extremity. There! I'll give you Ransome's for a treat; he breaks out at the toes, but his heels are intact. It's playwork mending for him compared with the other boys."
As I passed through the lobby I heard Mr. Burns' voice saying: "Shut the door of my room, will you, steward?" And Ransome's rather surprised: "Certainly, sir." I thought that all my feelings had been dulled into complete indifference. But I found it as trying as ever to be on deck.
He looked on in agony while Ransome's stethoscope wandered over Maisie's thin breast and back. It seemed to him that Ransome was taking an unusually long time about it, that he must be on the track of some terrible discovery.
Of those four young bodies, Ransome's was by far the finest. Even Booty, with his wild slenderness and faunlike grace, could not be compared with Ransome, so well knit, so perfect in every limb was he. Beside him the two young men from Putney and Wimbledon were distinctly weedy.
Ransome in the misfortunes of her son. They had brought him back to her. It had gone so far, Mr. Ransome's state, that there was no way in which it could be taken lightly. And she was depressed herself, perceiving it. Mr. Ransome's state made him unfit for business now, unfit to appear in the shop, above all unfit for the dispensary.
