"Could you not plead that you had but pretended to go with me to seize on my private papers?" suggested the ingenious mind of Ralegh. "I could. But shall I be believed? Shall I?" His loom was deepening to despair. Ralegh was stricken almost with remorse on his cousin's account. His generous heart was now more concerned with the harm to his friends than with his own doom.

"Written with the dying hand of, sometime thy husband, but now alas! overthrown, yours that was, but now not my own. Sir Walter Ralegh, long before he came to his untimely end, had written in his great History of the World a wonderful passage about death; it is justly celebrated, and is familiar to all men of letters throughout the world, so I will quote a portion of it for you:
Among the slain were the Governor of Manoa, who was Gondomar's own brother, and Sir Walter's eldest son. To Ralegh, waiting at the mouth of the Orinoco, came his beaten forces in retreat, with the terrible news of a happening that meant his ruin.
