The doctrines once almost peculiar to Wesley and his followers such as entire sanctification are now accepted and taught by many Churches, and the religious usages of Methodism are imitated, watchnight services being held, and revival mission services and prayer-meetings being conducted, in Anglican churches; while the hymns of Charles Wesley, sung by all English-speaking Protestants, and translated into many languages, enrich the devotional life of the Christian world.
After the 'revival' in Charleston, in 1825, she opened her house to social prayer-meetings.
A harassed, honorable, studious, ignorant, humorless, joke-popping, genuinely conscientious thumb of a man. His prayers were long and intimate. After the second hymn he would announce the coming social events class prayer-meetings and lantern-slide lectures by missionaries.
In the `Rest' are held prayer-meetings and Bible-classes, and when these are dismissed, the sailors find the open door of the `Welcome Home' ready to receive them, and the inmates there seek to deepen the good influence that has been brought to bear at the meetings and this in the midst of one of the very worst parts of London, where temptation to every species of evil is rampant, on the right-hand and on the left, before and behind.
Although my parents never after forbade my going to a Methodist or any other meeting, yet I saw it grieved them as I frequently attended those prayer-meetings, but never to the neglect of our own, and was often impressed to speak or offer prayer, but did not yield. I found, to my sorrow, that these omissions produced poverty of soul, and often cried, "O, my leanness! my leanness!"

It was to one of these that China went with her new-made friends. Nancy Carter's cabin was the meeting-house pro tem.
He took great pleasure in the little prayer-meetings, and in three months cheerfully and exultantly exchanged this world of suffering for the one where father, brother and sister awaited him. Worn out with anxiety, care, hard work and poor health, the mother followed; leaving the invalid girl and youngest boy; who are watched over, not only by their Friend in heaven, but friends on earth.
He knew his father ridiculed prayer-meetings, consequently he rose and began to walk in the direction of the group of people. 'Where are you going, Jack? cried Bunce. 'Only for a walk. I'll come back. His father acquiesced. Totty suspended her talk and gazed after him for a moment. Then she turned to Bunce. 'So you've found rooms, Mr. Bunce? she said, with a piece of sorrel between her lips.
My religious status, as well as my conception of life, were only advanced to where they should have been at an earlier period. Atheism was at that time beginning to work strongly among the students, and in opposition to it there began an antagonistic evangelical movement, with prayer-meetings amongst those religiously inclined.
He may pray his hour, unpausing, and no one thinks it long; for, indeed, at prayer-meetings four persons will sometimes pray an hour each, one with confession, one with private petitions, a third with petitions for church and kingdom, and a fourth with thanksgiving, neither part of the quartette being for an instant confused with the other.
