At this important juncture a letter, post-marked in New York on the day before, was offered in court, and a demand, based on its contents, made for a stay of proceedings.
Another week monotonous, tedious, almost interminable crept by, and one morning as Salome passed the post-office she inquired for letters, and received one post-marked New York and addressed to Miss Jane.
The next morning, while Von Barwig was waiting for a pupil he had very few in these days Jenny came into his room with a letter, at the sight of which his heart beat rapidly, for it was post-marked Germany. The handwriting was in a boyish scrawl he did not recognise. "Not many pupils to-day?" ventured Jenny. "No, they don't come; I'm afraid this is not just exactly the neighbourhood.
It did not occur to him that there might be society, save with these and his books; nor would it have occurred to him to enquire, or to seek entrance into it, if it existed; with a sort of intellectual hunger he rushed upon his books with a feeling that he had recently been dissipated, and misapplied his time and energies. Tuesday evening's mail brought him two letters, post-marked Newbury.
The next, and last which I have found, is entirely undated, but post-marked 20th April, 1837. "MY DEAR FRIEND, I don't know when a trifle has pleased me so much as the coincidence which set us a-writing to each other just at the same time. I have all the north-country superstition flowing through my veins, and do really believe in the exploded doctrine of sympathies.
"I 've seen enough of it," he retorted, as he examined the typewritten envelope post-marked "Montreal, Que." Then he drew out the inner sheet. On it, written by pen, he read the message: "Come to 381 King Edward when the coast is clear," and below this the initials "C. B." Blake, with the writing still before his eyes, opened a desk drawer and took out a large reading-glass.
Among the letters in her post-box, was one she felt instinctively to be from Andrew Bedient, though it was post-marked Albany. She hesitated to open the letter at first, for fear that he had attempted to explain his presence in Mrs. Wordling's room. This would affix him eternally to commonness in her mind. He had a right to go to Mrs.
"And the doubt was certainly a reasonable one," added the merchant; "now we only wait for you to remove it." "I will do that and I can prove all I say by my father's last letter to my mother, which is post-marked at Gloucester, Mass., in which he told all about the fight, and gave the reasons why he cleared out."
By the time he received Tiddler's atrocious sketch, representing the author of The Insurgent as a Diogenes looking for gray-eyed girls, he had ceased to smile over the thing. The joke was becoming a trifle stale. Then the letters began to come in, post-marked from all over the country.
Both Harry and Ferguson were glad to hear this, for they felt that Clapp's presence would be far from making the office more agreeable. "Here's a letter for you, Walton, also post-marked St. Louis," said Mr. Anderson, just afterward. Harry took it with surprise, and opened it at once. "It's from Luke Harrison," he said, looking at the signature.
