I have played Spillikins and Ping-Pong. But never again have I felt the excitement that used to wander athwart my moral backbone when I was put on to translate a passage containing a notorious crux and seventeen doubtful readings, with only that innate genius, which is the wonder of the civilized world, to pull me through.
The tennis-lawn was occupied by a succession of players, a ping-pong table stood in a quiet corner and attracted a certain number of devotees, and the grass-plot in front of the study window had been marked out for golf croquet. For those less actively disposed there were seats in the prettiest corners, and an endless supply of refreshments served on little tables under the trees.
When they did go Jimmie limping along with his clipped head tucked sulkily between his shoulders as if he were not really proud to take them-they found the place alive with fun. Besides the three girls and the woman, there was a young man from a near-by university. There were several Englishmen aboard, and they were supplied with a spirit kettle, a package of tea, some tins of biscuits, and an apparently inexhaustible supply of Cadbury's sweets, which they dispensed generously every afternoon. They had also a ping-pong outfit, and played. Every day the doctor's launch came out to see that none of us had escaped or developed cholera, and it brought us mail.
It is all very well to make up your minds to play bandits or chess, or ping-pong, or any other agreeable game but it is not easy to do it with spirit when all the wonderful wishes you can think of, or can't think of, are waiting for you round the corner.
If she looks like a million dollars she can talk about Russia, ping-pong, or the League of Nations and get away with it." "What else?" "Oh, I'm just beginning! There's your dancing." And you dance standing up straight instead of bending over a little.
That is to say, purely for business reasons for what he got out of it and the standing that it gave him he attended the Rising Star Mission and also frequented Hudson House, the social settlement where Miss Fanny Duryea taught him to play ping-pong and other exciting parlor games, and read to him from books adapted to an American child of ten.
