Elinor had gone out an hour earlier with Mr. Ormsby and Miss Van Brock in Mr. Ormsby's motor-car. When was he, David Kent, coming up? Did he know they were talking of spending the remainder of the summer at Breezeland Inn? And where was Mr. Loring all this time? Kent made fitting answers to all these queries, hung up the ear-piece and went away moodily reflective.

To preserve the continuity of my story, and not to fatigue the reader with the journals of my comings and goings from Ormsby Villa to Glenthorn Castle, and from Glenthorn Castle to Ormsby Villa, I must here relate the observations I made, and the incidents that occurred, during various visits at Sir Harry Ormsby's in the course of the summer.

"I'm making headway," was Ormsby's thought, "or she wouldn't take the trouble to excuse herself." "I think you are the most sensible girl I ever met, Dora." "You have no right to call me Dora." "In future, I shall do just as I choose. You know your father's wishes you know mine. I am patient, I can wait. After to-night, you are mine always, and forever.

She marked the eagerly anticipative solicitude of the boyish groom, contrasting it now and then with Ormsby's less obtrusive attentions. It was all very absurd and sentimental, she thought; and yet she was not without a curious heart-stirring of envy provoked by the self-satisfied complacency of the bride.

For several weeks the service was paralyzed, and had it been in the hands of faint-hearted men it would have been ended then and there. The climax came with the defeat and massacre of Major Ormsby's force of about fifty men by the Utes at the battle of Pyramid Lake in western Nevada.

I saw Ormsby's face as I spoke, and there was a look upon it which made me pity him. 'And you sent my poor child out on your errand, Cameron! Could you not have done it yourself? 'I wish I had! I exclaimed; 'oh, I wish I had! I tried to stop her, and then and then it was too late. Please tell me, sir, is she badly hurt?

The two men were talking earnestly, and, as she approached, her father shook hands heartily with Ormsby for some unknown reason and went out of the room. It looked like a plot to leave her at Vivian Ormsby's mercy. She made an excuse to follow her father. Now that the moment was come, her courage failed her.

But he felt that he had no need of evidence to know who his enemy was. Of his own circle, all were his friends, save only Captain Ormsby. And he had struck Ormsby. This, then, was Ormsby's revenge. After all, it were folly to permit the malevolence of a cad so to distress him. Since he was not a coward, the white feather concerned him not at all.

By and by you will have to spend money; but just now the need is for a cool head to keep our young firebrand out of the personalities. Where is he to-night?" Ormsby's smile was a grin. "I left him at 124 Tejon Avenue half an hour ago. Do you think he is likely to get into trouble there?"

"Nothing of the sort, my girl. Ormsby and I have settled that we are not to be separated. He's looking out for a big place, where there'll be a corner for an old man. Come, come, have done with this shilly-shallying. What on earth is the use of a two years' engagement? At the end of the two years, do you suppose you will be able to break your word and Ormsby's heart? No, my girl, it's not right.
